Friendly, shortened nickname based upon supposed, and likely fabricated, Templar "deity" Baphomet. The lowercase b is important because I am not actually Baphomet, nor am I trying to invoke Baphomet.

I used "baphomet" as a username over a decade ago on a few other sites. This was before bullshit like the Da Vinci Code got popular. I was using the name because I liked Eliphas Levi's conception of Baphomet as a representation of the absolute and a union of opposites. I was also reading a lot of William Blake around 2001-2002 and I was probably really fucking annoying to be around. Once I lightened the fuck up people started calling me baph.

I then proceeded to lurk around watmm for a few years until the announcement of Quaristice (or maybe it was an attempt to access the Ae live show torrents) made me want to register and start actively annoying watmm. Before I could think up a decent username, I'd fallen back on habit and entered "baph." I really should have thought it through.

My username in a few other places (eg last.fm, psn, and the soundcloud account I never use) is iteritinerant, which is from Finnegans Wake (the passage is my sig). Which I guess is even more pretentious. Fuck.

Insightful! I just thought your username was a phonetic spelling of how Northern English / Scottish people pronounce "bath".

i always hear this song when baph posts

combination of the song "Vamos" by the Pixies and "El Scorcho" by Weezer

I used it as a screen name in 8 or 9th grade on AIM

and now I'm cursed by it

I have no idea why I used it to sign up here. I would change it if I could. curse vamos

grue is a property used by nelson goodman to raise a problem for induction. normally we think that observing a bunch of green emeralds lends support to the generalization that all emeralds are green, including the ones that we haven't observed (those distant in time and space, for example).

now, suppose that the property grue applies to things observed before the year 3000 just in case they are green and to other things just in case they are blue. since all the emeralds we've ever observed are green and were observed before 3000, it seems we're justified in drawing the conclusion that all emeralds are grue. the problem is that this conflicts with the previous generalization that all emeralds are green, since the two generalizations issue conflicting predictions about emeralds we observe after 3000 (should we expect them to be green or blue?)

the puzzle is that it looks like it's impossible to learn from experience in a coherent way, unless we can find some reason for thinking that properties like green are projectible but properties like grue are not

it came to me randomly when I was registering. I like the sound of some Japanese words so I remembered this one. I don't watch Sailor Moon.

I always think of Sailor Moon when I see your name... sorry.

Alcofribas is a pseudonym Francois Rabelais used when he published his first book. i'm not totally certain why i used this when registering but i'm guessing bc i thought there was something of the spirit of rabelais on teh forum -- the scatology, the dick jokes, the general air of humor and sarcasm, the many heavy topics taken up amidst all this, etc. i'm sure at the time i registered there was probably a crowley influence as well.

some of you may recall my push to become Alcofribas C but papa wasn't into it. perhaps i might take a cue from baph and become alco.

for a while i was lucas boots, turned into viia when i registered for watmm drunk and missed the keys

A spiny, contraversial fish that swims into your peehole. I later wondered, "why would I choose that as a username, it seems so low-brow" but I guess I annoy people quite a bit in real life, much like a candiru fish. So it fits... lol

which actually came from this Monkees (!) track:

If I had it to do over again I'd probably opt for Dr Bombay or Boobs Dobaline instead.

Nice thread!

hmm....intriguing. never heard of that before.

747 was part of a number obsession I used to/kinda still do have. I was going to make a name for each project under 747. So 747Music, 747Photography, 747Film, you get the picture. Unfortunately I don't have the funds available to purchase decent equipment for each of these projects, so I focus just on music.

My name is David Peck, which is often shortened to D.Peck by friends and associates. Deepex was my attempt at "IDMing" that abbreviation for this message board a la Aphex or Ceephax.

When I was in grade school, I remember seeing a cardboard cutout with a purple starfield background printed on it being used to promote some kind of sweepstakes, probably for Disney or for batteries. I most likely saw it at my family's video rental store here in Washington State, but I seem to remember seeing it under the fluorescent lighting of the BX at Malmstrom AFB in Montana. This was a fairly common image in advertisements during the late 80s and early 90s. The lighting had bleached the printing slightly, so that was slowly fading from purple to blue.

Somehow this image has stuck with me. I always found it beautiful and poignant on multiple levels.

yeah so when i was 12 some funny korean kid said "dr lopez was a jew and was killed" when he was talking about life in shakespearean times for a presentation in english class. It was apropos of nothing and i thought it was funny so it stuck. sometimes when dr lopez is taken on a site i'll do dr lopez the jew. it's never ever taken. I'm not jewish or of iberian extraction btw.
