Most frightening film sequences.

Recommended Posts

I saw this when i was way too young to know what Twin peaks was or who david lynch was and it messed up my mind and gave me nightmares (of seeing my own clone and freaking out)

the 'i'm at your house right now' scene i Lost highway of course did a number on me. There's another scene from Lost highway i can't find on youtube that used to mess me up too, it was like a tracking shot of the kids family & gary busey crying in the front yard Edited by John Ehrlichman

One of the last scenes in Silence of the Lambs. Maybe not terribly frightening for some but it's one of the most intense moments I've seen in any movie.

Exorcist (directors cut) - Was released in theaters years ago for some reason. Anniversary or something... When you hear some weird chattering & Linda Blair is walking down the stairs on all 4s backwards was a wtf. Yea it looked off by how they filmed it, but still, creep factor was full on. Didn't know anything of that scene watching the movie as a kid.

Isn't that like the most iconic Exorcist scene apart from the 180º? Weird

captain howdy frame shot freaked me out the most tbh, and that's saying a lot in that movie

'Papillon' with Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman. The second dream he has in solitary confinement... I find that scene the most shiver evoking thing I've ever seen on film, and it's not even a horror movie. Saw it when I was 9 or something, stuck with me. Fantastic film and performance.

(not the best quality video of it on Youtube, but it's the best cut)

Maybe a bit dull out of context but as a climax of such an intense and bleak movie I was completely sucked into it. One of my favorite recent movies although I've only seen it once so far.

David Lynch owns this thread. Theres frightening and then theres deeply disturbing.

Might add the Frank Booth "Love Letter" scene in Blue Velvet, plus Bobby Peru's "jump all round that hole, just like a bunny,,,," from Wild At Heart, the Harry Dean Stanton murder from the same and even the phone call he gets prior to that with Laura D's mum is proper-WTF (reminds me of a certain ex too lol)....

Jaws has some classically good 1's.... the 1st attack, the head bobbing out of the hull @ Richard Dreyfus, Brody seeing the shark leer up when no-one else sees it......

for other horror frights you need some build up,

opening scene of The Shining,,,,,, for the genius music (def 1 for a mix) and the flowing panorama that precedes all the paranoia

with The Exorcist always thought 95% of it was bs EXCEPT the opening "confrontation" when Max Von-S gets the first hint of exactly what he's up against. Have to lob it oop for the menacing suggestive sounds alone

Also, the entirety of The Innocents

I completely forgot to mention this, but a huge part of my master's thesis, which was about the sound of dreams in movies, was about the sound design and music/ambient in that scene. Because of that, I've probably seen that scene over a hundred times - and it still sends shivers down my back once you see the bum.

the final scene of the original 70's Wicker Man = MINT cant find a vid doe sorry, but it just brings all that weirdness out to a bloody conclusion with the Equalizer spewing "oh Lord oh Jesus Christ", Christopher Lee and his minions swaying n singing while the flames crackle up....

more modern bits would be the possession scene from A Field In England, even if it doesnt really happen as a stand alone clip, in the broader context of the film it works a treat. the end of Kill List has its moments too, where the 2 mercenaries are watching the ritual and then get chased through all the tunnels = creeper

lol what. that was the most cheesiest i've ever seen. must be that i've never watched that movie.

Watching that scene out of context doesn't do it any favour.

Also, the end scene from Mulholland Drive freaks me out every single time I watch it.

Communion freaked me out as a kid, bizarre film with loads of mental sequences

The hospital scene in Jacobs Ladder too - still scares the Jesus out of me.

I haven't seen exorcist 2 or 3 - just assumed they'd be shite. Will check them out now.

Zulawski's Possession (1981) is rammed full of demented twisted scenes,,,,, the metamorphosis scene where Adjani transforms,,,,, Heinz Bennent leering and jabbering as Sam Neil's cuckold....... warped as fuck

u-tub has a few versions of the full film, but for specifics said no

Jacob's Ladder has some beauties, all the shaking heads for 1...
