I've done a couple jazz compositions on my soundcloud, would love to talk more about it with you, but you can get an idea from my soundcloud.

Awesome man! I love your work... Listened to these tracks a little while back. Very unique fusion of styles (:

Totally down to collab for sure! Just let me know!

Hi

I play jazz trumpet

I have been playing since I am 16 years old

I know many standards and particularly tunes that jazz trumpeters played

as well as most of the skatalites material especially Don Drummond compositions

here is a few examples

One is a new band I helped form with the bassist that focuses on Jamaican Ska and Jazz

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XI3QOfLIxhE

and this is me testing out a new horn that I was endorsed to play

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=70K4kkRgEys

This is an out jazz group I play in

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TfEN3DMUV3U

and this is me fucking around with electronics and my horn

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1mKo88PfY18

I use a different set up that includes a pedalboard with a loop pedal

and also incorporating the kaoss pads

Anyway

Yeah I play Jazz and its outer realms

If you want horn on something I would be down

it would be cooler if you were in NY and we could play live

Wow man, that is some really beautiful stuff! Thanks so much for sharing! I love Skatalites too - got to see em live back in the early/mid 2000's. You really have some chops on that horn. Would love to collab man. Wish i lived out in ny too haha.. Didnt realize there were this many talented jazz musicians on here (: we should all form a giant watmm jazz orchestra! :D Edited by Lane Visitor

I'm a semi-pro jazz musician. Been making money with it for about 8 years. Probably played a good hundred gigs by now. Bass/Piano/Vocals. I can work out whatever. Ragtime to Robert Glasper. I know jazz theory like the back of my hand. But am I gonna lend you my expertise...ha! no. HA! never.

Haha fair enough brother! I respect that (: Hope my post doesnt come across like im looking to steal peoples expertise or anything.. Truly just looking to collaborate and make some cool music.

there's not much guitar playing on my soundcloud, but this is my playing:

pm me if i can help with anything

edit: oh and i guess this too:

Here's some of my old guitar improv that I managed to record... Not pure jazz, per se, but I listened to ze reference YouTube vids, and my blues stylez might fit into that context. Um, yah. WATMM instrument players unite! I also play bebop guitar/piano, horribly.

In this track from 1:30 onwards, you can hear a sort of hippie jam:

BTW, if you don't play blues/jazz yourself, you're prolly not gonna write chord progressions in your tracks to suit the styles, meaning that the person would write it for you? In that case, it'd be a non-fun collab, cuz I suppose you'd write the beatz, and they'd write the music? Not too fun... What would be fun, is if you write the beatz and chord progressions and bass, and you have someone improv or write lead melody stuffs.

nice! of course, that's definitely what i was intending - to come up with progressions and beats and see if anyone wants to add elements to it. im not a jazz master or anything, i cant even read music haha, but i do have a basic grasp on the sound, i think as far as chord progressions .. here are a few jazzy things ive done w my donovan alias (all original).. some of them are more downtempo / lounge-y, (the san tablos ones are more jazzy ish for sure) but still amount to something i guess...

Dude! Incredible work there! Thanks for sharing.. damn, mad talent for sure. That first cloud was so feel good and jazzy but slightly edgy and dark with a hard hitting hip hop under-current. Really unique stuff. (:

that is a cool tune you found there.

i can tell you off top that the main chord progression is

G/A (gmajor over a pedal) / / /

A add9 (Amajor triad with 2nd also) / / /

Am7/D (Aminor 7 over D pedal) / / /

F/G / F#7b5 /

Funk from that era uses a lot of fixed chord voicings that are often the chord of another note superimposed over a pedal. You see this G over A, F over G stuff constantly.

^ Ahh wow, ok thanks for the insight! Yeah, I do often hear those "chords over other chords" thing going on in a lot of this music. Strangely, I hear that too in certain other styles. I think some of Underworld's progressions do things that give similar effects.

  • 4 weeks later...

here is a clip I just recorded from a jam sesh. playing on a terrible yamaha that is missing two tuning pegs so the tuning is silly. But man that piano player is on top of it. And Ron Veliz is th guitarist. Old time session musician.
