awepittance
I've noticed this board change a bit in the past few years with more people expressing interest in various aspects of what I would describe as a rising alt-right culture, by that I mean a trendy seemingly 'hip' version of right wing ideology. Probably the most mainstream example of this is Red Eye on Fox News but i've seen it now spread to many corners of the internet like for example the Joe Rogan podcast (where he has shifted more towards the right of the spectrum as a reaction to hyper sensitive liberalism). Other examples are the Anthony Cumia 'network' (lol) which now has Gavin McInnnes as a host (the co-founder of Vice who has now converted to Catholicism) These alt-right people are particularly upset at such phrases and concepts as: - social justice warriors- rape culture - fat shaming- transphobia- homophobia - islamophobia- geopolitical pacifism - criticizing environmentally hazardous industries like fracking or deep sea oil drilling- criticizing America's foreign policy in a general global sense- criticizing capitalism fundamentallyIn some ways I could understand how people, especially younger people could find this whole world attractive. On the other hand I also find it very disturbing that a lot of these so-called alt-right culture warriors actually heavily misrepresent what actual liberals think and paint an extremely cartoonish portrait of what being a liberal or on the left side of the spectrum is. I'm posting this here to just feel out a general consensus of how much of this kind of stuff you digest, how seriously you take it and also what it means moving forward in media. Will the pendulum swing the other way only when a Republican takes the presidency? I could post a longer diatribe but I won't.here are two particularly striking (and very off-putting) examples of what i'm talking about and again I feel the need to point out how weird it is that a young british gay guy who writes for BreitBart.com is now a hip media figureanother example is someone I actually used to dig (back when I read infowars in the 2004-2006) who has now become this super intense alt-right crusader, now I absolutely can't stand him what's interesting is that South Park was sort of at the tip of the spear on this culture phenomenon a long time ago, but now that its become so prominent South Park isn't looking so hot anymore (in fact its reaches into Alt-right territory are extremely predictable now, the opening episode with Caitlyn Jenner was probably one of the most paint by numbers algorithmic reactionary south park episodes I've seen possibly ever) oh yeah I forget to mention there is now a porn star who is involved in this aspect of media named Mercedes Carrera Edited November 9, 2015 by John Ehrlichman Thanks Haha Confused Sad Facepalm Burger Farnsworth Big Brain Like × Hide awepittance's signature Hide all signatures Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/89251-the-rise-of-the-alt-right-culture-thoughts/ Share on other sites
Danny O Flannagin
I'd say Joe Rogan is still pretty left wing. The shit he says about feminism makes me cringe (also calling trans women "he"), but at the same time there seems to be a rise in internet feminism based around public shaming that seems to make more people hate feminism than accept it. If you watched the entire Podcast with Gavin McInnnes, you'll notice that every time Gavin goes to the bathroom, Joe talked about how crazy this guy is and how he can't tell if he's fucking around or not. I never heard of "alt-right" (I'm guessing your coining this term) but if anything like this exists, there's not enough people in it to make it relevant. awepittance
Joe is hard to pin down. I only brought him into this thread because he's been regularly featuring people like this a lot more in the last 6 months than he ever did before. He generally would have on lets just say a lot less generically right-wing people, thats no longer the case. I didn't coin the term, but I would disagree that its not very relevant. At least it seems to me that its becoming more trendy by the day, part of why i made this thread is to see just how much traction it has Edited November 9, 2015 by John Ehrlichman Thanks Haha Confused Sad Facepalm Burger Farnsworth Big Brain Like × Hide awepittance's signature Hide all signatures Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/89251-the-rise-of-the-alt-right-culture-thoughts/#findComment-2388589 Share on other sites
delet...
I watched a good forty minutes of that rogan thing yesterday, and he was kind of shocked when that gavin guy said he supported fracking. I think you've got the wrong end of the stick on rogan. And really, this thread should be about how totalitarian and new world order agenda the left has gotten, which obviously feeds some of these pundits through fresh minds looking for an alternative, and clearly they are there to help warp them, paid by the same propagandists that push the bullshit that is going on in the left at the moment. I don't feel that rogan is part of that though as he says in that very video (did you watch it), and as for PJW he's working for alexi, so has to go down the phoney right/left divde bullshit thing that alexi editorial policy seems to be pushing nowadays, despite alex himself and all of his hosts saying on numerous occasions that it's bullshit, but then liberals this, liberals that blah dee blah, divide and conquer. Danny O Flannagin
Honestly, i've started listening to the JRE recently and the first one i sat through in hole was the Gavin Mcinnes one. I fucking hate everything the guy represents but he's admittedly entertaining as hell. He's like that one politically incorrect friend who's fun to have around just to see what crazy thing he'll say next. It's also funny when Gavin gets completely shot down, like he'll bring up statistics and then Joe's intern will fact check him and Gavin ends up being completely wrong. I think to ignore someone like this would be closed minded. I'll ask this though, how many of you would say you are a feminist? I feel like most men within my age bracket (18-30) wouldn't say they are feminists. delet...
depends what you mean by feminist. the movement has been hijacked from an equality thing which achieved it's aims (in the west) to some inebriated soap box for the unkind of heart. The equality thing i think everyone would say they agree with. The dodgy stat waving and bullying cunt bag thing, not so much. may be rude
people very commonly adopt the political leaning of their parents. they are the ones who first teach you how the world works, after all, and answer questions about why things are the way they are. the only appeal republican politicians really have these days is that they claim to stand for lower taxes. the iraq war certainly didn't do anything to help people's taxes, however. also the financial crisis that resulted from the deregulation that rightists harp so much also did nothing for people's wallets. the right is the big money party. low taxes is a dog whistle meant to attract mega rich donors. they dont care about low taxes as a principle, unless they're deluded. the party operates on claiming to stand for low taxes but what they really care about is catering to the rich. does deregulation really benefit society? of course not. its just what the rich want. its easy to see how young people can fall for low-tax sham. if someone tells you that the democrats will tax you either to line their own pockets or to redistribute wealth in stupid ways, that would sound bad. so once they're in the outlook mom and dad have about republicans and democrats, the other issues are processed in a backward manner. rather than reasoning about whether or not marriage was invented by christianity, they reason backward from republicans are anti gay marriage, therefore gay marriage is wrong. drillkicker
The new PC developments have polarized a lot of people, and it's caused the formerly "uncool" right-wing to become attractive to younger men in particular.
