That led me down the rabbit hole to this film, which was really well done, thorough and eye opening. They nailed the late 70s/ early 80s aesthetic with the analogue recording gear, glitchy VHS tapes, the hair and fashion, and it’s always poorly lit. I had never connected the book Michelle Remembers to Sybil, and more importantly, Michelle and Dr. Pazder directly worked to “recover” the memories of children at the McMartin daycare, even the Catholic Church and the Pope were involved. Michelle Remembers destroyed the lives of almost everyone involved, and influenced things like True Detective, and even The Conjuring universe, with Ed and Lorrain Warren gaining notoriety around the same time. It’s surprising that neither documentary really made the connection to Salem, as children were again guided by adults to make false claims against those targeted by the community. Thank God they made us read The Crucible in high school.
