Fox Creates Electronic Music Awards Show with Paul Oakenfold

Apparently, Paul Oakenfold feels electronic music doesn't get its due at traditional music awards, so Fox is starting their own awards show:

I wonder if this will be just mainstream edm garbage, or they will actually recognize real electronic music?

My money's on EDM garbage with occasional nods to guys like Jon Hopkins

I do not know how relevant Paul Oakenfold is these days concerning innovation in music, but it is my impression that he is one those bigstar dj's who, about 15 years ago, adjusted their sails according to the winds that blow.

Award ceremonies are just a big circle jerk.

The kudos and job satisfaction should be reward enough for anything.

 

Fuck anyone that takes awards seriously. It just goes to show that the top earners in electronic music are as vapid and fame hungry as the rest of celebrity world.

Yeah, I was watching a brief Corbett report thing on Maurice strong, some high level UN environmental apparatchik that recently passed. Anyway, there a photo of Maurice clutching a plaque with a beaming smile that he had been awarded for best global environment thing or other, that he had been given by nelson rockefeller, who was a close associate of his that he had known for decades and I was thinking how fucking meaningless those awards are. So many are favours to friends, like back into older times when monarchs would grant gratuities and honours to their inner circle. It's only purpose I can see other than, yes feeding the vanity of these people, is to build this wall of respectability and validation around these people whom you deem worthy, mostly due to your nepotistic tendency, so that those on the outside have to show you respect you wouldn't otherwise command.

 

It would be easier if awards shows for art were like the olympics, and so mostly based on the talent and hard graft that generates a good performance, result.

Oh totally, I've been to a few good-sized edm music festivals... I readily admit I had fun, and some nice moments happened, but most of it's just "fun" music, good for the weekend but nothing groundbreaking.

i think award shows are vapid circle jerks myself but if i were starting a career that was taking off and i wanted to be able to focus on doing music/acting/whatever for my living and get better at it and do more work, i'd sure as fuck go and i'd be a retard not to. it's called promotion. you either want to make music or act for a living or you don't. it's not exactly like aphex being in videos that had his face plastered all over the place and were shown on mtv was some great statement of anti-capitalism or anti-commercialism. to the contrary. and he can now live in a castle of vintage synths because of them.
