Great interview. Anyone know if the artwork throughout it is from ae and tdr, or just put in by resident advisor? Some of it is really great, would love to see more

The artwork is a mix of AE (Designers Republic) and Christian Olofsson, who is the graphic designer of Resident Advisor and the electronic label Enklav. (www.soundcloud.com/enklav)

Nice, i've listened to some Enklav stuff before actually. I wasn't a huge fan of the ae_live artwork but now with elseq's art, it's grown on me a lot. I like the idea of the artwork evolving through different iterations with each release, but having a constant overall aesthetic. At least for the releases put out through the ae_store.

Anyway these two especially are nice:

With programming it's exactly the same thing, you've created an instruction set, and that's defined by what you wanted to achieve, so there's an element of your personality and wishes that exists in code terms now. I think all programmers feel like that when they make something: that a little bit of themselves is out there doing its thing.

Man, Sean is totally right with this. I love the idea of little bits of me running in systems around the world. Adds a lot to the job satisfaction. Ghosts in the shell, innit.

I'm hoping they carry on with the quick delivery of tracks via digital. Physical formats are lush, but I like how they view making a track on a Friday and getting it out on the following Monday. They do need to be careful with the kinda EP/album context though, someone dumping like 50+ tracks suddenly is definitely overwhelming. Quickly learned that with AFX dump.

Stoked to watch OA II. The movement thing never bothered me, anyone familiar with Druidic studies will recognize the importance of movement to get to higher planes.

there's no proper framework and modes of listening currently existing to accommodate such release strategy, that's why it seems so weird/awkward/overwhelming at this point.

yeah even if you break it down to 5 distinct parts it's still weird bc of the track lengths. but awesome as fuck.

this is not what they'll be doing, I think. is this a verbatim quote from the article? I don't recall so, but I very much doubt, even if they said so, that they would rush material like that.

I personally tend to switch off when there's a deluge of haphazard unstructured materiaI (Snares' Syndrome). didn't care for the AFX soundcloud dump either btw, I'm waiting on the best-of.

The aim originally, a year or so ago, was uploading, showing Warp, getting the nod off Warp, getting Designers Republic to create some graphics, and have it out on Monday morning from a session on Friday. In theory you could do that.

oho, in-a seeeeory, eh?

it's possible, the thought occurred to me. it's just a freeform way of putting the music out there with no schedule restrictions like the usual release process. exciting times ahead.

edit: live sets from their bedrooms :cisfor: no more tours :cerious: (course not, what with the true feels of being in the physical space of the room/hall...)

It mixes well with recent bot development hype also

One of the best artist interviews I ever read. I met them briefly after one of the US Confield dates and they were incredibly approachable.

interesting how they say their system is like a 3rd member of the band, then quickly start walking that back... a little too insistently... like they're afraid.

Yes, and it's ironic that just a few days before this interview was released, I was speaking to a friend about how Confield was made and mentioned their having been asked the same question in the early aughts. At the time, they responded to the question as if the idea was offensive and totally inaccurate, so it's interesting to find a much more open an semi-confirmative response here. Their interviewee personalities have also definitely mellowed a bit, though.

Well the way the question was framed in the early '00s interviews was kinda leading iirc. It would end up implying they just pushed a button and their software would spit out Pen Expers or something, which is not the case.

even if it is... it's their sw. usually there's a big difference between generative and algorithmic music

^ speak for yourself. the only people who would say no would be people who haven't left the IDM closet yet. I would've been in there myself about 8-9 years ago, so I like to think optimistically and hope that most people eventually leave it.
