it's a combo of both.

this kind of stuff is shot twice (despite this looking like multiple fixed cameras). once in close up and medium shot (and audience is there) and a second time with the "judges" reacting. this is why it looks so staged. some of the shots with the fuck up might be genuine shots where this guy couldn't believe what was happening to him, but because he only had 2 takes, the editor decided to really fsck him- perhaps under request from the network. that's showbiz
