Metallica - Hardwired...To Self-Destruct

The rythm guitar has a pretty heavy riff... Jaymz has still his steel fist for a good wall of sound and crushiness, but on the other side, Larz miss a lot of precision, on the snare rolls and the kickdrum.

But not bad for old grumpy guys i guess, lol

Metal !!

lol true. There were some pretty heavy moments on Death Magnetic though.. that bit at 6:16 in All Nightmare Long kinda floored me the first time I heard it.. classic Metallica imo

edit: I really fkn love the chorus on Moth Into Flame (especially the harmonies), finally sounds like they're not just rehashing old ideas

Discharge are the fucking daddies. I was listening to Hear Nothing See Nothing Say Nothing just a couple of hours ago.

Yeah! Compare that album to Kill 'em All, which was released a year later.  :-)

Drumming will always be a young man's game. It's tough to pin down 100% but there is a slight "sag" in Lars' timing these days. Anyone else feel it? It's very small but it makes me want to lift his shirt up and twist his nipple in order to change the latency settings a few milliseconds.

It's not slight at all. He's completely off the grid and has been for more than 25 years. The studio recordings are edited so much I doubt there's even a single bar that hasn't been tampered with.

Bonham did play in the bottom of the grid, it sounded sexy as fuck

Ulrich plays off the grid, like his rolls are always late and it sounds dull imo

Although i like his drum writing, his patterns always match with the rythm guitar, with a good energy in it

Yeah, I have to say, despite his sloppiness (basically since the beginning, really) he really does have an ear for cool drum patterns. I quite like how in the thrashy sections he often delays/anticipates the crash so it occurs in time with the first/last snare in the pattern; this really fucks with my sense of timing in songs like Fight Fire With Fire, where he successfully makes it sound like the snare is on the 1..

Metallica's Lars Ulrich might move back to Denmark if Donald Trump becomes US President.

hmmm...maybe we could live with a Trump presidency...

I think whatever skills Lars lacks as a drummer, he probably makes up for in the song ideas and arrangement department.

Metallica are the Star Wars of metal

and I mean that in the worst possible way

Most of these liberal celebs that don't have european homes to go to have stated that they want to go to canada, funny how none say that they want to go to mexico.

A member of the non sequitairiate.

yeah, especially seeing as there are more Mexicans leaving the US to go home than there are Mexicans illegally entering the US. Mexico has better food than Canada, and nicer weather.

They could have a winter home in mexico and rest of the year house in canada. I disagree on the food thing though.

I've been thinking about this, and it brings me back to the idea that Metallica isn't just about being heavy; I can't really think of any other band that blended prog and thrash as well as they did in the 80s, at least until Meshuggah came along. It's a constant argument I have with thrash purists, who say "buh just listen to Slayer instead".. but Slayer never had any quiet moments, or fucked up time signatures, or 8 minute songs with elaborate arrangements. I get it, but my main reason for enjoying metal isn't just meathead aggression all the time.

very true, I read an interview with Dave Lombardo while he was out of Slayer and in Fantamos saying he got frustrated with them (probably King) about their lack of experimentalism, and the fact it was a waste of time trying to suggest something that wasn't designed to rip your face off. Seeing as Slayer pretty much pioneered a whole genre of music its a bit odd accusing your band of not being experimental heheh. Anyway I think Lombardo was saying he knew where his place was, and he found that a bit upsetting. I wish Slayer had done more slower doomy tracks like Gemini, 'cause thats a fucking killer tune.

Seasons in the Abyss was a great one too.

Yeah, a big part of what made Metallica so great in the 80's/early 90's was that they were able to be so melodic without losing the heaviness.  It kept their music a lot more interesting than the other thrash bands.  Their compositions were always quite sophisticated.  Megadeth was (is) like that too, except the whiny vocals sort of kill the heavy factor.
