Good Industrial music that you can recommend

ffs, how claustrophobic was that....but didn't stop me from loving it. The last time a tune made me feel like that was when I stumbled upon a fan-made video for Lustmord's Immersion which was built around some footage of today's Chernobyl. The video seems to have been taken down now but I can still remember the rusty merry-go-around and the half-collapsed swimming facility. And especially how the nature has slowly begun to take the town back to itself. Kinda like what Tyler Durden had in mind.

 

Damn, I've been trying to find some instrumental-only industrial in the same vein of Transistori but haven't had much luck. There are some EN videos of their early shows but I don't really dig the vocals. Wish they had released more tracks like Zentrifuge (from Strategies Against Architecture III). Ya know, sucker for the drums and clangs.

I've been going through a lot of my EBM CDs in the van recently, and hot damn is Haujobb - Polarity ever good.  Gridlock - Further, and Numb - Wasted Sky are also really fantastic releases.  Great driving music, excellent production.  I never did hear Gridlock's last two albums, but plan to fix that this week - Formless just finished downloading.  Wooo!  I hear they ditched the vocals and went in a more IDM direction.

Nice. I love cEvin Key's Music For Cats LP, really its own league.

Rediscovered Front Line Assembly after 10+ break. This was the shit back in the day before turning myself into 100% IDM trend nerd. Was more a Skinny Puppy fan but in my case FLA seems to have stood the test of time better (the 90's stuff that is, can't really get into post 2000 stuff). Kinda thrilled about this. Glad I didn't sold my discs at one point. Some picks:

 

 

 

 

Okay they're way more EBM than pure industrial butwhatevs (and [FLA]vour Of the Weak is very strongly Techno influenced). But it's all Industrial, eh???

I went through all my FLA CDs earlier this year when I was getting acquainted with my new van's stereo.  So good!  I really enjoy everything up to and including Implode.  That album was my introduction to them.  The production on that one was pretty ahead of the game.  Placticity is such a classic.  The Haujobb remix off that single is killer too.

Doesn't look like Alec Empire has been mentioned yet, but here you go. This was one of my favorite albums from my teens.

I emphatically second anyone who said Ministry, Skinny Puppy, KMFDM, Godflesh and Coil (especially Love’s Secret Domain). And I’m surprised that (unless I missed it somewhere) no one has mentioned My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult or Pigface (they are an industrial super group with a revolving door of legends). TKK’s Confessions Of A Knife is a classic. So is anything Pigface did between Gub and Washing Machine Mouth.

any good industrial recommendations from 2018?

I haven't heard a lot of newer industrial that's really grabbed me, but Youth Code caught my ear.  Very Skinny Puppy influenced, maybe a bit ATR inspired too.  Not quite 2018, but only a couple years off:

Especially Prophecy from Implode is good. Yet, the late 90's stuff can't beat the stuff from Leeb and Fulber duo. Funnily enough I can't stand TNI. Has some good songs, but there are better versions of them on Live Wired (wtf, no DVD/ Blu-ray release still). In general, imo the biggest strength of FLA is that the songs are very well balanced, possibly thanks to Greg Reely. Neither synths, samples or guitars jump to your face. In example, look at Velvet Acid Christ. God, the thousand or so samples from Se7en on Phucking Phreak makes me want to shove pencils to my ears.

 

Found my Haujobb discs as well. Find their discography quite (or maybe too) varied; every album seems to be more or less different from the previous one. Like, there's a big leap from early (serious) FLA mimicking of Homes & Gardens to ambient of Ninetynine to the more Drum'n Bass influenced Polarity. Myer's voice isn't really the strongest element of their stuff.

Heard a few times TKK mentioned, but never bothered to check them out. Tried Pigface which sounded too much like what it was - a super group. Little similar to Revolting Cocks. Coil had their moments, although I did find them too "cult" or something. Ministry, Skinny Puppy and KMFDM were the groups I was more into. Too Dark Park and Angst were stellar. Now thinking of it, I think I really underrated Xtort. But anything by KMFDM after Symbols is just shit. Not even going to type imo, because they really are.

 

Other names I remember mentioned frequently were Cubanate (iirc someone mentioned them earlier here too) and Clock DVA.....and :wumpscut:

Wumpscut had so much potential.  It got really cheesy, really fast, but some of his early stuff was genuinely unnerving.

Kind of a far cry from the one Wumpscut album I have, Wreath of Barbs (alternatively, Resse's Puffs).

 

Definitely digging this raw sound more.... kind of to Oscillik's point about the grit of the earlier industrial.

 

 

 

Speaking of cheese, this is maybe more of a guilty pleasure than "good industrial" (most of the good stuff I like has already been mentioned itt, like Gridlock, Skinny Puppy, Cabaret Voltaire, Coil, Zoviet France, Haujobb/Architect, etc...). On the dance-ier/EBM/formulaic-song-structure side of the spectrum, [sITD]:

 

I'd probably like this band a lot more if they didn't feel the need to have a dramatic chorus breakdown in just about every track. Someday I'm gonna make a mix of just their bangin' verses.

It's sort of like Rammstein without the heavy guitars.  I would drive to it.

 

On the grittier side, Test Dept's 1984 debut album has got to be one of the greatest industrial albums of all time.  They don't get nearly enough credit.  It's a really intense, bleak and fascinating listen.

God I love Ministry (before they burnt out). Them and Godflesh serve all my industrial needs (Killing Joke and Cabaret Voltaire from time to time).

 

One day I'll get into Coil (though I've been saying that for about twenty years maybe more)

Thanks for the recommendation. That Killian account has loads of great stuff. Found it a couple of years ago when tried to search some similar bands to Godflesh. Very cool channel. Godflesh is such a behemoth that it would deserve a thread of its own

All good mixes, but for those who are longing to get themselves into more orthodox industrial I heavily recommend the mix by Orphx. It covers pretty much everything from the early days to more recent Rhythmic noise stuff mixed together with skill. Track list should say enough

 

 

 

 

 

The document itself was OK I guess. Somehow left the feeling they wasted some potential especially when considering they had interviewed pretty much everyone who was essential to the scene. Ravelec and co. had made previously a good doc of Berlin and Paris Techno scene which is way better. Has Adam X, Regis, Kareem, Ancient Methods plus more. I definitely you on the “supergroup” thing. However, Gub is about as genuinely experimental as supergroups can be. That album and Fook are my faves (though I can see how Fook might not hold up as well with age. Almost everything after that was pretty lame). En Esch from KMFDM has some pretty incredible moments on those early albums...
