Still remember clearly the day I found out. This was step 2 of devaluation of Squarepusher for me. Step 1 was finding out about the fucking Amen break. Pretty sure at the time IDM was ded already?

What is IDM anyway? I haven't figured out what it is. It isn't a specific sound, that's for sure. These days it's real analord-ish, but it used to be kinda breatbeat-y? How in the world does the same genre change entirely.

This is obviously a very serious conundrum. One to shake the ages.

Maybe IDM doesn't exist. Maybe genres don't exist. Maybe music doesn't exist. Maybe you don't exist.

EDIT: Or maybe IDM is the human experience under the guise of a musical genre. Think about how much humans have changed, we used to be hunters and gatherers who created civilization and technology to CHANGE.IDM had the same history of CHANGE

Existing doesn't exist! Which makes everything you said true, but overstatements. We made IDM up in the same way atoms made us up.

I loved edIT's 'Crying Over Pros For No Reason' until I spent like five minutes with dBlue Glitch. I had spent like two years developing techniques to hand edit shit to have that glitched out sound only to find that he used a fucking plugin for the entire album. FUCK.

Tom never used that shit though. I'm listening to Go Plastic right now btw. still mad genius-level work, and all done painstakingly and with creative vision before plugins allowed you to mass produce the same kind of sound.

man, how good is that little hiphop interlude in Go Spastic before it takes off again... I think that might be my favourite SQP track.

edit: also he does more nuanced mixing up of melodic elements with percussive elements that I'm not sure you can do with plugins still

Everyone started labelling their noise music as IDM. That's why it died.

Therefore, IDM just got noiser, and noisier... and now everyone's swarmed in noise and weird artwork - reminiscing back to 2001.

..and whoever come up with the term "electronic listening music", you're a dork.

At the end it's not about how it's made but how it sounds, maybe

But maybe the whole concept of music is complete bullshit. I mean - come one - it's just sounds, what's so great about it? still love it though

anticipating IDM to rise from the ashes as ELM. Less rocket thrusters and math equations, more tobacco pipes and buzzfeed articles on existentialism.

I'm kind of grateful for dBlue glitch because it made what was most obvious and annoying about mid-aughties IDM so accessible that it killed that aspect dead, and it killed the worst kind of IDM with it. Unfortunately it seems like it killed any momentum IDM in general had too.

I wish everyone just transitioned over into calling it 'Braindance'. A more creative term, and less 'condescending' for those who don't like it because of that.

My biggest 'gripe'... really my only one, is how bland and non-descriptive 'Intelligent Dance Music' is. At least EDM is more descriptive. EDM would be more descriptive for IDM actually.

dBlue glitch is definitely a factor. It was insanely popular and cloned, but the tape-pitchbend and reverse effects from that vst stick out very painfully in other people's tracks. Even aphex's. I ended up making a clone of it in Max about 5 years ago for that reason.

i think moreso that it was an anarchaic period where the personal home computer was starting to enter everybody's homes and lots of people who were not into synthesizers or music programming had all sorts of quirky alternatives to making music easier than a professional would have to and with little or no knowledge. Same thing can be said for hip hop and tape machines/samplers vs. being able to afford real instruments to express yourself. After that died down and non-autistic people moved in and wanted to start making money off of things then did IDM die.

tl;dr version - normal people co-opted autism and failed at it.

Yep, braindance is a lot closer now to what IDM started off as (imo) and it hasn't got very noisy yet. We can just keep coming up with new genres as they get ruined :w00t:

geniuswave, PHD-step, smartdrone and cleverdub etc.. < just invented all of these

lawsuits imminent

That's a... clever use... of words there.

*accidentally kills thread*

Btw, I have no clue what the difference between Braindance and IDM is. I am under the impression they're the same thing.
