Living on the streets for a night

Recommended Posts

I've been having a growing fascination with life on the streets, and while I would not want fo be homeless, I think it would be exciting to experience homelessness for 24-48 hours. There's something that seems freeing about the idea of having the open space around you with society around, but with no obligation to live by a conventional social norm or follow the heard. I know i can just go camping in the woods, but I love the sounds and bustle of the city, and the infinite scenarios that could happen, the twisting alleyways, shadows of skyscrapers, etc. I have a specific fascination with the idea of curling up next to giant power generators/industrial fans you might see near an underground parking structure or the foot of a huge building and just falling asleep next to those overwhelming noises.

Of course in my ideal scenario, the temperatures right, no dangerous people around, and access to water and food etc lol

Lots of people pretend to be homeless. Just remember to be kvlt and not a p0ser. I hear Trader Joe's are great places to dumpster dive.

I have a similar fascination but with cancer. Life seems like it would be more interesting with a deadline.

Wow, seriously? Sorry im pretty gullible (not sure if youre for real), but i could see how someone might want to experience other people's lives for a moment. That sounds very intense.

You would really visit the lanes :cisfor:

I did this once and it was cool. Drugs involved. Also cool: Sleep in the forest when it's summer

I hate cold temperatures though, so for me that works only in summer

Need to get some friends to join me nex time

- edit: I worked in a factpory building once, I had to add white paint to all the walls. That site was so fascinating whith all these weitrd noises and cables and pipes. I wish I could hang out there one night but it seems that these sites are guarded unfortunately

There's a gang (or gangs) of kids that attack homeless guys and film it in my area

Really sick little fucks. That vid is at the entrance of a station which has about 80,000 users per day. They don't give a fuck who sees. So dangerous out there for the homeless :(

its not good, wouldn't say I've ever been homeless but during time spent travelling US/ Europe ive found myself without a place to crash n had to stay on streets. You really have to go to bed a dawn and sleep through the day to avoid people stealing yer shit n throwing rocks at your head, have to steal things too n not get in trouble with po po.

Yeah make sure you've got some means of self-defense in case some punks try to attack you in the middle of the night. I'd recommended packing hand grenades just in case.

To keep it real and analog, I'm gonna start posting to WATMM by writing my posts in fountain pen on hemp paper, putting them in bottles, and throwing them into the ocean.

You are a pretty disgusting person for trying to romanticize living on the streets. At any point during that you can get up and leave when things go bad, whereas they can't.

Just book a hotel or something for the night and you'll be alright.

Hang out in starbucks or a pub-cafe during the day.

I love the smell of autism in the morning.

So by that logic, anyone who by choice: goes camping for a weekend, goes for a trek in the desert, runs away from home as a teenager, goes solo backpacking, quits their job with no backup plan, goes dumpster diving or metal detecting as a sport, decides to live off the grid in a camper, etc etc etc is a disgusting person to you?? Really?

Sounds like you're the disgusting one, with non-conventional lifestyle-shaming and projecting or building assumptions or whatever that wanting to experience a glimpse of life through other people's shoes or off-the grid living equates to romanticizing those who are in worse positions. Your logic and assumption is completely flawed. Please think about what you say before verbally vomiting your ignorance over someone else's thread.

I had an old mate that did this worldwide for hipster reasons, started by spending one summer in a tent in a Stockholm campus forest, then did the same thing in London, to eventually squat and dumpster dive in NY central park. he was banned from re-entering the states after overstaying his student visa. I think he's in Paris these days doing the same thing. We don't have any contact but after these stints he'd always come home extremely fatigued, spend weeks in his own bed... then talk about how awesome it was. He studied drama class and was a typically bohemic lad, always went on and on about Kerouac. Insufferable in large doses.

I think it's quite vulgar to romanticize the whole deal. A UK reporter did this and froze to death in the first night.

I wonder if Lane walks on the opposite side of the street when he sees the real homeless

haha I'd love to be a prisoner in Auschwitz for a night or two, after so many WW2 movies i'd love to see some real jew prisoners, see the nazis too you know, experience such important moments of history in the flesh, see what it was really like. Maybe roberto benigni would appear and we'd have wacky adventures. Not like a real prisoner though, maybe if I could have proper meals and maybe not get killed.

For sure... I imagine the hipster fascination. Mine is more of a curiosity and desire for a specific scenario, if my environment could be controlled. I probably would not attempt this... The idea of falling asleep in an industrial / city / factory setting and being near a power generator/industrial fan thing i mentioned is probably what im more "romanticizing" than experiencing actual homelessness, though there's something meditative to me when thinking about what it might be like to just sit there and do nothing with no schedule, no one relying on me, no one to check in with, no walls around me, etc in a busy city by myself. People do this all the time in nature with backpacking, camping... Mine would be the same--just in an urban environment instead of a natural one i guess.

The IKEA here is covered with homeless people, a lot of them children, usually girls sent out by their parents to panhandle. It's heartbreaking.
