I don't think he'll be able to come back from all he's done with the cherry (ahem) on top being his sexually explicit online affair with a 15 year old. That whole 'subplot' really is surreal. Horny politician named Weiner cheats on his wife and is publicly shamed, she stands by him throughout (mirroring the wife's mentor Clinton's trials), then he fails again and again trying to rise back up to prominence, finally going beyond being just morally wrong and actually breaking the law. In the midst of the investigation into him, bullshit 'evidence' is found that dooms Clinton's election. It's going to make a great TV drama in 15 years. Or a shitty miniseries on CBS.

 

I doubt he'll come back from prison with his cherry at all.

At least one of these guys didn't get on a team this year, most people assume because he was the main guy getting attention. So this week many NFL players, teams, coaches, organizations members, etc, wanted to basically show Trump that he's out of line in what he said (some of these coaches and players are known Trump supporters). And also ya know they support the original cause....but most of them I think just wanted to leave the politics out of the game...because money, of course. But now they sort of felt like they had to hit back at Trump.

I've avoided it mostly but as auxien said, it's really now about asserting that individuals and private entities shouldn't bow down to the demands of an elected official, especially when they are in the form of hissy fit tweets.

The saddest thing to me, was Bob Costas was on CNN showing white and black fans yelling at each other and threatening to start fights at games. Sports was one of the last segments of American culture where even the most conservative white fans respected black players, and they all came together to cheer for their team. Now Trump has destroyed all of that. The one player who decided to come out of the locker and stand on the sidelines now has the highest selling football jersey. It's pathetic how Americans show their support or disdain for racial politics.

 

Don't even get me started on the new Trump / Howard Stern transcripts that were released.  Although they're 20 years old, there seems to be no limit to the depths this human piece of shit will sink to.

Yes and no. He's certainly fueling this fire though.

 

There's been a nasty racist hypocrisy to sports in America, NFL in particular, where white (and latino, other minorities) fans will readily refer to black players as thugs and animals, etc. Yet they seem obligated to have sports as an entertainment options. Not to mention they approach this subjectively - i.e. point this out of teams they don't like while stay mute (mostly) if it's a player on a team they root for. 

 

Part of the protest is to affirm that you can't have your cake and eat it too. I have a weird perspective on this because I have no qualms standing for the flag but I've found it becoming such a superficial show now. Big football games always have some crazy fanfare with dancers, singers, fireworks not to mention a flyby by military jets and some token nod to US troops (which is at best well-meaning but often missing the point and condescending imo). America is ironically the most ignorant public in terms of knowing what the military does and who is in it yet positive, fanciful idolization of our military is everywhere. They watch their blockbusters with military war machine porn, always displayed with exaggerated abilities I might add, while in reality the US military is at it's most inefficient spending state ever while being smaller and more disarrayed since WW2. People don't reflect on the fact the US is still engaged in it's longest war in history. People don't realize that most US fighter jets are grounded at the moment because of maintenance issues and funding problems. They instead shout USA, have a brief freedom boner, then proceed to drinking a bud, eating overpriced nachos, and watching men brutally run into other for hours.

 

These guys are protesting a tradition that's essentially been stripped of any meaning. That's the ironic part.

A meme I saw on FB this morning further proved the hypocrisy of the right, comparing the NFL players taking a knee on top to Kid Rock on the bottom, cutting a hole out of the center of the US flag and wearing it like a poncho. And this guy wants to run for senator??

You have to think about it in the handegg framework. If a team has a lead and the clock is almost out, the quarterback can kneel (take the knee) as a means of running out the time and winning the game. The opposite team usually doesn't defend rigorously because they know it's over and it's good sportsmanship. So, by taking the knee at the anthem, it's the ultimate "I'm sitting this shit out" in football terms and not how religion or monarchies see genuflection.
