my hot tip for this one: allow yourself to type in reddit.com in your browser when you feel the urge, allow yourself to click Go, allow the page to load even, and then close it without looking at anything. for some reason deflecting the urge this way worked for me. it may take several weeks of doing this but eventually you'll forget about it, your brain will start to regrow as you stop taking insta-opinions from the ADD college kid hivemind.

I think youtube, which doesn't fall in quite the same category as FB or Twitter but is definitely at the forefront of disinformation propagation, is the hardest one to beat overall. I'm not going to kill my yt account with my 5000+ favourites playlist that I've built over 13 years. at least it's easier not to engage with others on it but there is so much bullshit content and their leadership doesn't care at all.

I didn't have an immediate improvement and there was a cost to pay in terms of my social life, but I decided that if a connection could not be maintained without FB then it was an acceptable cost given the bigger problem. over time unplugging from that shit helped realign some of my perceptions. that was a few years ago, shortly after Cambridge Analytica which I naively thought would have been the nail in the coffin for a lot more people but which was basically ignored.

Yeah, I quit FB a few years ago as well, for a few reasons, but I basically concluded that any value from it wasn't worth the cost. Cambridge Analytica really underscored that for me... there were connections that were effectively lost, but I figured if they really wanted to get a hold of me they could via email, and if not it, wasn't a connection worth keeping, or rather, the connection was artificial to being with. But I was surprised at the feeling of liberation I gained not long after shutting it off.  I still have a few social media items as well that I just occasionally use, like Instagram and Youtube, but those never came close, for me, to the same level of toxicity. Somehow I've largely dodged Reddit all these years, heh

quit facebook some months ago finally. had hung on there because i needed it for work but once the pandemic settled in I dropped out of it and let my boss know it was his ballgame now and forever.  i was only there for a few people anymore anyways. i had hidden and unfollowed pretty much everyone except for maybe 5 people. once i did that facebook was more or less utilitarian and i could talk to some far away friends now and then. but one of those friends stopped talking to me for some reason still unknown to me and the other friends i could check in with via text or whatever. so it was really easy to kill that account for good. before all that i had deleted it from my phone years ago and would only check it at work anyways. it's a pretty shit site other than for finding out about local shows.

twitter isn't bad. i only follow a bunch of music or artist people and i try to avoid the right sidebar of "what's trending" because that's the rabbit hole of shit shows. 

tumblr is good for photography and art and design stuff and cyberpunk type shit.. just scrolling and looking at images and stuff. it's mindless and there's no other real interaction for me beyond that. 

instagram isn't so bad except for all the fucking ads. jesus there's so many ads. also only follow some friends and music people. it's good for that but there's still something silently toxic about it especially if you let it interfere with experiences.

I browse WATMM compulsively. It's the dumbest addiction ever, quite pathetic in fact.

yeah, good points. i try to project my consciousness into the future and view the evolved solution. i think increased norms of logical debate literacy and media literacy will be in the future, but that's a long-term thing, and it cannot be relied on as the only solution.  

• i would like to see momentum on the legislative initiative of bolstering public resources on logical analysis, civic manipulation and methodologies for assessing reporting, as well as school curiculums adding weight to critical thinking and civics.
• i think that society is growing a new layer, adjacent to journalism: a stratum of the public interacting with, more closely following, and somewhat participating in journalism. for example, sharing is distrbution. i think we're not used to thinking about this mode of civic participation so it's not yet fully evolved, and perhaps we will benefit from it being stronger.
• journalism needs to level up and one thing that will catalyze that is the public applying pressure to them to be better. this has been happening and it needs to continue.
• continued and increasing democratic participation will punish, disincentivize, and remove a number of bad actors
• there are ungodly media actors who need to have the shit beaten out of them, metaphorically. i don't know how, exactly, but they can't continue to be allowed to get away with their shit. maybe just increased awareness and shaming will punish them through their revenue. like, if every lefty decided to apply themselves to describing to rightists the heinous dog shit nature of fox, oan, newsmax, limbaugh, and alex jones, those shit feeders would feel the hit.   

social media: tweetdeck.twitter.com is great if you want to bypass the selection algorithm. open a couple home columns. you can link multiple accounts. maybe you want to have a pseudonymous activist account that follows a lot of journalists you like, that you use to influence them and lobby politicians. then another one to follow comedians. you can do that with lists, too. unfollow without pity, and twitter can be a good content feed. you can also contribute to the public conversation. 

- Socialise social media and put it under parliamentarian control. The idea that some tech company's para-police is responsible for handling matters of such high public importance is negligent, irresponsible and undemocratic. If you're at it, nationalise prisons, too. 

- You need public service broadcasting in the US (like in other modern countries). PBS is only almost what I mean - PBS gets financed through donations of businesses and private people and is dependant on selling stories. They and other broadcasters should constantly get government money so they aren't dependant on sensationalism and entertainment. Trump was financially worthwhile for commercial media, so they helped him (even the "left" ones in that they liked bashing him but not really doing their job beyond that - debunking and analysing and making the public aware of the true dimensions, which is a little less entertaining than saying how dumb his tweets are, and yields lesser ratings). The lack of public service broadcasting in the US leads to entertainment driven politics programs that are often dumb as fuck. PBS is still good, I guess, but do people actually watch PBS as much as the other broadcasters?

NPR FTW. It’s the only thing that kept me sane for the past 4-5 years. It’s also a huge bonus that you don’t need to look at the president’s face every time he’s in the news... plus all you need is headphones.
