RDJ Live visuals past - present - future

Recommended Posts

Seems to me a all new Weirdcore VJ experience for Field Day  is on the cards - and lets face it DfN was similar enough visuals-wise to the last batch of 2012 and even 2009 shows (Oz, Metz etc) - except for the intro War Games maps stuff in Texas and possibly the cheerleader section.

So I reckon RDJ may have asked WC to up-the-ante for this new tour, as he has been known to give free reign yet request a progression, given WC's interview about RDJ wanting his to leave out the scat/abattoir  stuff from SRTP festival 09.

Fucking cannot wait!

A small recap of  the visuals RDJ's employed in shows:

 - friends dancing - including Cylob as a banana, Paul Nicholson of 7\ logo fame

- professional dancers (Torino set)

- gurners (Manchester)

- Body builders

- Wheelchaired folks!

- WC -  scat/abattoir extremeness

- use of kinect for live scanning RDJ

- facemapping with crowd-facing cams

- collaborating musicians - die antwood

- use of performer wearing octopus-like sound/system during Hecker collab 09

Whats next? Holographics? VR somehow?

Did i miss anything?

Care to speculate/gush?

I don't think it's far fetched to say that if the budget was high enough we'd get something like a 3-D Kraftwerk show from Weirdcore for a one off gig

You missed that cute midget girl from 2002 ATP

And yeah, scat/abattoir/autopsy visuals from Sacrum Profanum 2009 was too much, I still got the links if anyone is interested.

I've never been so enamored watching a man stare at his laptop with a semi open gob. It's very odd

Jeez, was that as Aphex/AFX or a DJ Smojphace ?

I haven't eaten a Wagon Wheel since 07/11/07... ilovecubus.co.uk - 25ml of mp3 taken twice daily.

That was full two day Aphex Twin gig. Grant played as DJ Rephlex Records there as well.

and Chris Cunningham

oh wait, he actually played gig with Hecker

I was at that scat stuff at STRP, he also did it at Dour the same year iirc (I was there too). To be honest, it was more fascinating watching the crowd react to it than seeing the actual footage itself.

I think they also had someone with the headspeaker walking through the crowd at STRP 2009? Memories are hazy... I assumed it was a reference to Conrad Schnitzler anyway.

Curious to see what he has for Field Day, will be my fifth time seeing him but three of those times were quite samey visually (Weirdcore stuff). The other one had no visuals at all except for one orange lightbulb next to him on stage.

That was quite rubbish.

Thanks for sharing btw, I don't mean you. I just mean, if I was 15 and in a goth band that would be my backing show.

"They're about guns, lasers, robots with laser guns in space. Monsters from the future. Explosions. Sylvester Stallone doing a backflip on top of a spike while Robocop carries a ghost up a mountain. Bombs and swords and that... IDM is awesome."

I get that he was trying to shock the crowd for a laugh but honestly it's not funny, offensive, or gross. It's just dumb.

It was weirdcores idea apparently, to suit the end of show gabba assault. I thought it was the most perfect  thing ever at STRP... seeing the crowd retch!

How'd I forget the teddys!

My first gig was in a theatre in Dublin - he'd a bearded dancer on stage with long hair but it was also my first trip so....not sure!

Aye it's a little surprising - Sort of thing I could imagine him wanting to do in his teens but kinda thought he'd have grown out of that sort of thing. Cunningham seemed to do similar stuff on his sets too which I always felt was a little off.

I haven't eaten a Wagon Wheel since 07/11/07... ilovecubus.co.uk - 25ml of mp3 taken twice daily.

Richard once said somewhere (maybe on sc, can't remember) that he wasn't aware of this gross shit to play at that time.

Ah reminds me of Arca/Kanda live visuals

I always wondered if the weird face trope, that distorted face theme that aphex gets going in a lot of his music videos, album covers, and PR was something he really wanted or if it's just some public image thing that he was coerced into just like "aw fuck it whatever". When I listen to his music I don't want to think about his face. Dammit I just want to enjoy the music. "Oh they aphex twins? The scary children with the faces? come to daddy!" - no fuck no. I resent when people generalize him that way. It's honestly fucking dumb. I guess he can't escape that at this point.

I remember RDJ saying something about how he doesn't want an identity but has to have one to make a living. If it's not affecting his work and it's exposing the general public to AFX I don't really see it as anything too bad, it's just a really stupid advertisement that Rich probably had nothing to do with besides showing up to a photoshoot. I hate the "silly spooky scary" persona that Warp has to put on him in order to make money but I do have to admit, the Syro fold face is pretty endearing.

First time he used his face was on the cover of ICBYD where he used a drawing of his face that he had made himself. In an interview he said there was this unwritten rule about techno musicians not showing their face so he did the exact opposite. I think he chose to do this himself. He did also state to have regretted it after.

I actually feel the face thing fits perfectly with the music on every album, it fits the mood and let's face it, the music can be scary as hell on occasions. And the face seems to evolve with the mood of the music hence the less scary face of Syro.

I'm sure if Rich didn't want his noggin used he'd have been able to control it. He seems to me to be blazé about it in  general and its such a key motif that he must've seen the benefits in terms of hype.I suspect his own amusement/bemusement  plays a part to as in jeeze, isn't it weird what my grinning face can do - oh well, lets keep going as its fun. The face mapping thing was particularly genius, turning the tables somewhat - Oh you like my face, now you can all have it.

I just see it as being very playful and slightly cynical of the fame thing but without being too .......hmm, in your face about it, so to speak!

He also does similar things with samples - several intros to shows features vocals that seem to be messages from a sort of big-brother grinning-overlord talking to the raving crowd........

All this ultimately adds to the amazing music and mixing to give a feeling of masterfulness

I recall i was pretty traumatized by that autopsy stuff when i saw footage in 2010 or so (i saw such stuff for the first time in my life). I even stopped to listen to his music for year or so lol.
