RDJ Live visuals past - present - future

Recommended Posts

I was convinced that Ryan Wyer was going to be a dancer at DfN. I'm even more convinced he'll be at Field Day on stage at some point.

One can dream.

In my humble opinion, I think RDJ could take the visual side of his shows a LOT further. The Weirdcore stuff is interesting, but I don't think it is anywhere close to the  evocative power of the tracks Aphex plays. It's also barely in sync. To be fair I think this is true of most VJs. But then again, just like Aphex is at the top music wise, he should work with someone at the top visuals wise. I'm not the biggest fan of Amon Tobin, but he definitely tries a lot harder than Aphex as far as visuals are concerned.

My guess is that Aphex is a bit too lazy and non-committal to want to raise the bar. I speak from experience! I used to be in touch with him by email back in 2005.  He had agreed to giving me an unreleased track back then for an experimental animation project of mine that we would probably have released on a DVD or something.
But then instead of that he asked me on short notice to prepare some VJing stuff for that famous Manchester gig, and for one in Italy that was cancelled. He ended up not really liking the stuff I had sent him, which wasn't a shocker to me given how difficult it was to communicate with him and get him to sign off on anything. Anyway, message to RDJ: if you're gonna have visuals at a show, you can do better dude!

What was the track like?

The ol' bugger never gave it! He was like, "I'll think about you when I review my tracks". I had asked him for a omgygjya switch 7 type of track.

Interesting dude!  But I dunno - he goes for the lo-fi, colorful  and goofy rather than polished. I reckon Weirdcore can up the game but stay on the same vibe. The nts gif is a great example of where to go.

As an aside - huge props to squarepusher for doing his own visuals-integrated-to-music that works brilliantly .

Of course Autechre have the best visuals...

yeah, Squarepusher has good visuals usually. I haven't seen him live in a while, but his massive LED screen with simple but very tight FFT analysis worked well I think. In that same minimal vein, Ryoji Ikeda is also good.

it was not very different last night

just lush lasers and cool visuals

they had a camera on a crane that went up vertically so you had people's faces then it pulled far up like a birds eye view

which was lush

weirdcore used very obscure (for non-spaniards) spanish celebrities for the Primavera set to do the faceswap thing he does at gigs... that was nice
