Fuark this is some quality stuff. I disliked the album with Mark Fell (unlike most here, I remember people playing it over and over in the plug.dj) and dropped him as a whole, but this is next level. Loving it.

This release is totally blowing my mind... I love it.

Thank you for posting about it.

I've also checked out The Neurobiology of Moral Decision Making... I'll probably wind up purchasing that with my next paycheck.

Awesome FM synthesis...

=D

"Repeater", 2018 BANGER!!! perfect follow up to the Incredible "Untitled 7" with Mark Fell, yes! SOOOOOO fucking good!!!

mark fell, same as afx, loves to prize and suport ppl who mimic him ...but same as afx's copycats, lazar is only a pale imitation of the original

imo

In this release, GB brings some funk in an afx way, and some house like early snd releases... This is a little bit more organic than before i think. Ok he's not  an absolute creative master but he does this very well and sometimes, like "Untitled 7" or "Repeater", he's really at the top! :music: :music: :music:

It does sound a lot like Atavism.. but like, from a slightly different angle?

if it's just a diff angle then i dont believe he understood atavism in the right way...

but what really puzzles me lately, and his music reminds me of this, is how ppl manage to totally confuse sound with music (yes, i know there's a tin or blur line between them sometimes). the closest parabola i can come up with atm is 'syntax vs semantics'... imagine if it'd be common to confuse syntax with semantics, how wrong we would be, but today that's very popular in the, so called, field of experimental music. it came to the academic circles too who are lost in their logical concepts of logical and 'god-forbid-emotional music' (cause if you really feel something it must be about something, so it must be about something that matters to YOU, so it's subjective, so it's POLITICAL), so now they can allow them self to feel SOMETHING without content. wow so pure! that's not pure at all, IT'S SHIT!

maybe the main stream is pushing this. maybe it's like that cause it's easier to gain and sell technical than real creative achievements; the industry is pushing in that direction, record labels are connected with them and music production magazines, forums and net portals are all playing along and everybody gets their piece of money, even so called 'artists', especially universities and all come (back) to 'experimental artists' which also needs (wants) money. it's not the right way, it's not the only way but it's the easiest, the fastest and the most controllable way. fakt this planet!

imo

p.s. atavism is/was not in this picture

edit: it's 5 am and im drunk and all came to me. sorry

Maybe?

I had a long reply written out but I deleted it because it was getting too wanky.

What is emotional content in music though? Are you talking about only specific emotions being expected/allowed? Couldn't we say that "cold and emotionless" counts as "emotional content" in a way? This kind of music, where there is less reliance on traditional melodic/harmonic progression, is something I often seek out, and love listening to. I personally don't think anyone making this music would need to inject some superficial "emotional content" into it just so that it can be categorised more traditionally as music. Maybe I'm taking you way out of context here, sorry if I am, but this kind of thing is very close to home for me.

Unfold is playful and uplifting enough to me to qualify as emotional. And funky enough to sense the human behind the computer. Definitely not as mellow as some other records I love, but still. It’s amazing futuristic club music, nothing more, nothing less.

I’ve never connected emotionally at all with anything by Mark Fell / SND. Their stuff sounds impressive yet so formal to my ears.

I din’t feel like GL is a MF copycat. He’s just built on this sound-palette. It’d be absurd to deny the obvious MF influence... but I hear a lot of Errorsmith / Razor in GL’s music. Nothing bad with having (obvious) influences, especially when the music’s that good!

Yeah, gotta say, at least with this album there are some rather growly, twisty sounds that I've never heard from SND/Mark Fell solo. It's gonna be interesting how he progresses from this.

He did make a record with Fell right?  Surely see each others as peers.

How you guys feel about Rian Treanor?

Imo they all bring something new to the table and they are all unique in their own way and all worth a listen.

This GL album is killer, I dont think ive heard anything from Fell that is as dj friendly and funky that is coming from or maybe more made for the dj and club but all ears if you guys have anything to recommend.  The sound design on this is crazy cool, gets a bit intense after a while but Im really digging what he and Rian Treanor are doing with these like Additive synthesis methods and club structures. Very fun and damn it sounds good on big systems

He did a corker of a remix for Fennesz's track Fa that I reckon you'd definitely get away with at a club (still not sure on the use of the MLK sample though):

I haven't eaten a Wagon Wheel since 07/11/07... ilovecubus.co.uk - 25ml of mp3 taken twice daily.
