you know they heard this song and tweaked it - it's technically not sampled in any way but the structure, tone, delivery, even the fucking vocal cadences and phrasing are dead on

Sure, but if was totally accidentally similar I wouldn't be the least bit surprised, because it doesn't seem to be 'copying' at least on my first listen. Not trying to argue one way or the other, it's certainly possible I just didn't catch what y'all are catching...gospel vocals over a hip hop beat? Okay, literally hundreds of times that's been done, easily. Beat is similar-ish, at best, but not really, track structure isn't really similar, vibe is sorta close but not that much really, rap does have some similar cadences a couple of times, yeah...but that's literally how hip hop was built up, rappers copying others' flows and modifying them. Still done constantly, all the time, if Gambino had even heard the original. If not, it's a pretty natural rhythm to rap in over that type of beat, I guess? Totally just spitballing obviously....

Not sure if you meant this actually or not but this seems at least plausible, and was my first thoughts. Could they have heard the Jase track and said yeah let's do something like that? Sure, of course. If they come out tomorrow and say that's what happened, then yeah they probably should've acknowledged him in the credits/contacted him/gave him some cash/credit on it...but I just sorta doubt that's what happened. I meant it, though I'm still in the "seems like they prob ripped this lesser known artist off" camp.  Most of the plageurism lawsuits I've heard about seem like bullshit to me though... it's usually for some very basic composition thing that could easily just be two artists coming up with kind of similar ideas around the same time.  It's very seldom a case where the two songs in question are melodically/rhythmically complex and original.  This is no exception, but it still sounds like a very plausible rip-off situation to me.  Producers do pull that shit all the time, but usually it's more like a "hey look at this clever reference" thing.

I'm no general Gambino fan at all, but holy hell do those tracks both sound generic as fuck. The second one had some touch of interesting production to it, but that first one could've been literally anyone in the pop world at all. Is everyone doing this shit with the summer songs now? I guess it's financially viable to just throw out some shit in the hopes it catches on and blows the fuck up for ~3 months amongst the masses, I remember hearing a few of these 'summer' songs in the last few years but it's all just terrible and gross.

They sound like Toro Y Moi and Blood Orange filler tracks. Pretty meh.

And yeah summer song cash grabs have been around awhile
