apparently the eu just banned single use plastics, which is pretty huge.

actually, i thought that would include things like outer packaging and water bottles, but its just straws, cups, platers, cutlery, etc.

...basically the law could be dead before it comes into effect because states representing more than 35% of the EU's population now oppose it.

best thing i've read on the topic so far. this whole "ban meme law" talk seems a bit hyperbolical to me

Very dumb. Hopefully, it doesn't get past the Commission, though that's pretty unlikely. It has been watered down via a bunch of amendments last year, so it's not as terrible as it was to begin with, but it still leaves scope for some terrible implementations at national level (as it's just a directive, it won't have any immediate force in law). Because it's so open to interpretation it's likely to be tangled up in the courts when it eventually does emerge as varying national legislation, so the European court can still prevent this from becoming too bad.

Article 11 has a good chance of being a complete waste of time though, Google should just refuse to index anyone who tries to apply it. Tanking page impressions will quickly bring them back down to earth, probably with a blanket permissive licence. Article 13 is more of a problem.

The EU Copyright Directive was voted through with a sizeable majority, but when it came to the question of whether to allow a vote on amendments, the motion was defeated by a margin of just five votes. If the plenary session in Strasbourg had approved the vote, there’d have been a chance to delete controversial Articles 11 and 13 from the Directive.

Now that a list of how Swedish MEPs voted has been released, it looks as though there were at least two, possibly even three MEPs who voted incorrectly by pressing the wrong button.

yeah, we're pretty mad about that here.. altough news have been a bit conflated on this. Apparently it was only one mep from the social democrats whose wrong vote actually was counted leaving the result 315 vs 314
