Blir
I think I love episode 8. It's an absolute mess of a film with some really great parts and some incredibly bad parts. The mystery of how it ended up being such a clusterfuck meant I was riveted the whole way through. I prefer it to Rogue One by miles, but that's only because there's nothing of interest or note in Rogue One. I prefer it to Rogue One by miles, but that's only because there's nothing of interest or note in Rogue One. See I actually liked Rogue One a lot because of that - I can digest the expanded universe 2.0 stuff forever because it doesn't fuck with the story-lines of major characters and it can be ballsier and less hokey overall. ILast Jedi is messy that's for sure but I enjoyed just fine. Bit long and meanders too much in the first half. I think they bungled the story-line with AFA being too predictable and paralleling ANH so I can't fault Rian too much. My pet theory is he either didn't know how to make a bold plot choice and/or he was getting too much pressure from other consultants/producers at Disney. They could of done far more interesting stuff regarding the power dynamics and politics of post-ROTJ instead of giving us the Rebellion vs. Empire redux. The whole reset of the Jedi Order and discarding the black and white good vs evil dynamic was a interesting dynamic introduced but not really explored. Luke was pretty clunky the first 2/3 of the film, I can see why Mark was so iffy on this. His role at the end and interaction with Leia made up for it. On the flipside I was totally fine with the stuff fanboys complained about: - A-ok with Snoke dying (my pet theory was he didn't exist in the first place, but was this force apparition of persona Kylo developed - what we saw of him was Kylo projecting for others to view. Shit theory yes but then again Snoke was a shit character to begin with). - Diversity is such a moot point - it's a fucking space opera. Actually to SW as a franchise in general they cast a lot of real, believable looking people, ironic considering it's sci-fi. Every person bitching about Rose, Rey, etc. is just pissed off that there isn't other white male for them to project their own personal hero fantasy on as easily. Sure the plots involving Rey and Pink hair post-midlife crisis SoCal mom Laura Dern sucked but they themselves were just fine. On 7/12/2018 at 6:40 PM, Lada Laika said: Yeah I liked 8 too. Regardless I just feel like the whole trilogy is turning out to be a really wasted opportunity. Regardless I just feel like the whole trilogy is turning out to be a really wasted opportunity. I watched Force Awakens again the other day and that thing drags more in the middle than any sort of casino planet rodeo. You can feel the pauses when the camera lingers a few seconds extra, or the characters look at each other a little too long, because they're waiting for the audience to stop hooting and hollering. The first half hour or so is great and then it just slowly unravels itself until that admittedly great final shot. I dunno. YMMV obviously. I find TLJ much more interesting, and I'm seriously bummed Abrams is back at the helm (although in fairness, he'll probably do better than Trevorrow would have). Also Episode I birthed that rad pod racing game. This is the healthiest attitude on the whole series. I think that's why I don't even hate the prequels that much, I have nostalgia for the spinoff games and I was a fan of Shadows of The Empire and many of the PC and VGs before that movie was released, so it wasn't that jarring of a disappointment when Phantom Menace came out. The EU was fucking huge, some good, some bad, some ugly AF and while I had to kind of wrap my head around the reset when Disney bought the franchise I'm still fine with it b/c this was always the dynamic of Star Wars to me anyway: you pick and choose what you really want to get into. I love certain aspects of the series: very enamored with the original aesthetics of the IV-VI, so much so that I dig the 80s marvel comics and the art of Ralph McQuarrie and Syd Mead more so than just about any other media of the franchise. Had a bunch of micromachines, figures, and starfighter toys. I have fond memories of playing the mid-90s PC games and pouring over Dark Horse comics from that era. As much as I love SW I'm glad I never dove into super fandom - and I don't judge those who do - because when you start getting tattoos or spending $$$ on cosplay, collectibles, print and electronic media, etc. it's inevitable that you can develop irrational attachment that leads to very visceral love or hatred of decisions made by those producing the films. Instead of approaching the series with awe, wonder, and curiosity people fall into a trap of feeling obligated for the franchise to look, feel, and act in a certain way. I pity those who have fallen into that uhh, dark side.
