Holy fuck is that new song bad.

It sounds like a band ripping off some Tycho elements and making some super wack Chillout EDM music.

After this I just can't support the guy anymore.  Not that it matters, he's got about 600,000 festival goers in my place.

No, not considering Tycho (or anyone for that matter) for another Featured Artist. In fact, as I'm planning the other parts of the site, I'm not sure we'll need the Featured Artist subforums as much or in the current format they are - there might be more discreet ways of offering fans of particular artists we feature here. Time will tell.

I honestly listen to all four releases - I don't have one particular favourite over the other, but I guess if I had to rank them it would be :

Dive > Epoch > Awake > Past is Prologue. Rory aka Nitemoves drumming on Awake is just too damn good.

That’s a really interesting ranking! Not saying your opinion is “wrong” at all. Why rank PiP last? Just curious. I assume due to its unabashed BoC rip-off stylings?

I keep trying Epoch but it’s just so so dull. He’s a technical wiz but man it bums me out how disinterested I am in his direction since dive.

No; I like a lot of tracks on PiP, but for me I think Tycho really found his sound starting with Dive, and it has evolved and grown since then, with Epoch being his (IMO) second best release after Dive.

Both Epoch and Awake I initially didn't 'instalike' like I did with Dive, but they both grew on me as I listened to them more and more, especially Awake. I think after I 'got' Awake, when Epoch came out I 'understood' better what to listen for and appreciate, if that makes sense.

Awake sounded like he had resigned himself from attempting mimickry, so I appreciated the redirected approach. I remember being excited when the singles were being released, since it seemed he had found a distinct sound for himself. Epoch was similar enough that when I hear it, I know it's a Tycho track and IIRC, was nominated for a Grammy (that Flume won, whatev).

These new tracks seem like a departure, though. I like his stuff without vocals.

Completely agree with your ranking.

Picture the scene. Middle-Class suburbia. Sunday lunchtime....and turns to her. "Ah, it's the new Tycho album."

I literally heard Tycho playing inside a Starbucks at Disneyland, no jokes.

I think this is just him further experimenting... I don't foresee a day where he doesn't do instrumental tracks anymore.

And, there is an instrumental version of Pink + Blue... although I think he should have listed the tracks as "Pink + Blue (Vocal version)" and "Pink + Blue" - an opposite of how most artists who do do vocal tracks explicitly list their instrumental versions.

I wonder if he's tried singing himself for any tracks?

Do you mean for the upcoming release?

That, or any unreleased tracks for that matter - it's been awhile since I last spoke to him (DfN 2016) and I remember talking with him about potentially adding vocals, but he didn't share anything concrete regarding his work or plans then.

My commute radio go to, KUTX, has added "Pink & Blue" to their rotation and I have to confess the song is growing on me quite a lot.  The chorus and instrumentation at 1:16 onward is the best bit, reminds of the timbres and arrangements in Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts and Before the Dawn Heals Us era M83.

He's also released another vocal/non vocal track from the album, "Japan":

Instrumental:

I'd have to be stoned out of my mind to be remotely interested in this, and I'm not even sure that would do it for me. The vocals detract, the fact that there is an instrumental version is proof enough. All of his output though well produced, is uninspired, boring, and generic. It all feels like some sort of student project: create a product, graphic design, web presence, etc.

So far Easy doesn't sound so bad . . .

Easy was the first track he unveiled when he announced he was working on a new album.

I haven't listened to it yet - probably will save it for the car as Tycho is always good driving music...

I got to the second track and had to get back to work, but it didn't "hook" me the way Awake did.

Listened to it over the weekend... far too short at 8 tracks/29 minutes!

'Japan' is growing on me - didn't like it at first, but now I do like it.

The two purely instrumental tracks are good, but not Tycho at his best IMO.

Jury's still out on this one - need more listens.

This album doesn't do anything for me, it's terrible. It's bland, boring, the lyrics suck and with it being only 29 minutes it looks like a half-assed Tycho demo album

Well, for me the vocals kill the whole album. The vocals are just shite.

no-digital release is a fuggin' sh*t idea

Good news for anyone who hated the vocals on Weather. He released "Simulcast" today, which are instrumental and re-worked versions of tracks on that album:
