Burial - Claustro / State Forest

Funny thing about Burial for me....he goes back to sounding like himself on "Claustro" and it feels like an ape or pastiche. It reminded me that 2006 is a really fucking long time ago. It just doesn't hit today like it did then but that's just me I'm sure. "State Forest" is a lush piece of ambience but Dedekind Cut did it better. Not much need to buy that one alone.

when through bitter life experience and bad trips you gradually develop a scaly crust of cynicism, a hair-trigger of insanity and paranoia, a burden of crushed dreams - then and only then, will you be a true wattmer.

I guess it's the best release since Truant/Rough Sleeper (almost 7 years now). So how can it still be meh?

cuz burial has always been p meh

Quite good on 1st listen!

Burial is a fucking tease though that last 30 seconds or so of Claustro are lush and should go on much longer!

Liked state forest more than i thought i would as wasn't mega keen on subtemple/beach fires and was expecting  this to be similarly meh

Everyone thinking burial has lost it though is mad.. Rival dealer, and his remixes over the past few years (especially deep summer) have  been some of the best shit he has ever done. Having said that I also grew to proper love Rodent so what do i know! ?

Nah he’s lost it. I’m glad he’s just pleasing himself but this shit is dull.

Maybe he went on a bunch of holidays hence the song names

Seems Burial is trying to keep his head above water.

First track is weak, second track a bit more interesting but it all seems a rehash of other weak stuff he's made in the last few years.

He's a peculiar artist as I don't really like his first 2 albums but love South London Boroughs, Kindred and Rival Dealer Ep's. Whatever.

New stuff sounds good especially State Forest. I'm such a sucker for that sound.

Is zippo still there?

"Claustro" does it for me, though I also liked "Rodent" and can understand the scepticism around.

There was a point once-upon-a-time I thought Burial was going to have skills of progression akin to Autechre. There was a tangible feeling that Burial was just writing a whole new chapter, a wisest of wise of sonic grasshoppers!

That hasn't happened, I think somehow his saving grace is his mysterious persona, which was a very wise move. But it's all got a bit boring tbh. That's what the red wine is telling me.

Here's hoping, but might be awhile or god forbid never!

Nah.. if you had to compare him to a featured artist he is so much more an afx. Similar sort of myths around them both and they both have a special sonic signature which is all their own (but often imitated!) Also no one got sonic progression like Ae! ?

Everyone just wait til that true sequel to Untrue drops to see what he’s really been up to...

He's had 12 years. I don't think it's coming.

I'm in camp "he didn't lose it, he never had it". Burial has always been incredibly dull and it's perplexing to me what the appeal was to begin with, although if anyone enjoyed it all the power to them. Very boring stuff IMO since day 1.

I think I'd rather throw on some 1990s Ferry Corsten or Tiesto lol.

I was in the “I don’t understand Burial” for the longest time. Once I figured out it’s amazing on Christmas night for a few tracks, I was ok with it. All good. Good tunes for a moment or two. That’s enough for me.

I will have another listen myself to see if it wasn't just being depressed and living in London that made it seem like a good album at the time ?

Kind like trip hop for the 00s...unfortunately always conjures up breathy hyperbolic Mary Anne Hobbes introductions for me...

Probably mentioned before but his remix of Bloc Party's Where is Home was on repeat for a while:

Well, no. There were something like 13 years between Aphex Twin releases. No one said anything about a follow-up to another album.

At this point, Untrue seems like lightning in a bottle.

Sure they did, people including joyrex iirc were saying before syro was announced that they thought there would never be another Aphex Twin album
