👆 my 1st coment on this thread lol

same boat man, world music in itself is cringey af... this thread should be called folk music...

I'm also utterly interested in ethnomusicology, have some projects I would love to start in Senegal but it's kinda hard right now to fully invest on that...

back in 2012 or such when I got into this I spent like 4 years listening almost exclusively to folk music and derivatives mainly from Africa and South America... it still is what I mostly listen nowadays...

French movie by a Finnish director (Aki Kaurismäki), which actually lived in portugal for a while, with an mbalax senegalese song by a Hasse Walli who spent some time in Senegal during the 80's recording with local musicians...

highly recommended, not just this movie, his entire filmography is great...

check teranga beat and analog africa labels if you haven't already... ✌️

Wait, are you Senegalese? If so, we need to talk, brother! Senegal has one of the most intricate and hypnotic drumming patterns around.
I have been fascinated with Sabar drumming since forever.

I've posted a lot of stuff in the incredible Music from Africa thread, check it out... yeah my favorite instrument from the sabar is the talking drum...

there was a user on YouTube who used to post hundreds of tapes from there, cause in the 80's producing vynil records was way too expensive than releasing music in tapes... I want to find those reels, master them or such and re-release them... this is my jam 👇

I have his blog but in my laptop... his and lots from people who've been uploading tapes and vinyl from several African countries...

"De codru" performed by Florica Mâzgoi, field recording from 1952, Romania.

The musical instrument is a plain pear leaf.

Released back in January under Kampala-based Nyege Nyege Tapes. Still my top jam of 2024.

To keep it real and analog, I'm gonna start posting to WATMM by writing my posts in fountain pen on hemp paper, putting them in bottles, and throwing them into the ocean.

gotta dig on that label, I'm following it on bandcamp but never really invested enough time on it... that track is a killer 💯
