Artists that went big after starting online.

Boring factoid incoming

Pretty sure Lily Allen was the first, and she went massive. However at the time there was a lot of bullshit about her being just some unknown kid, who nobody knew, which I'm sure was the spin at the time. Mummy and daddy have friends in very high places.

Arctic Monkeys  were another first, both artists 2006. Yep that kind of signals the time we were discussing in another thread about the time when the music compass seemed to loose it's bearings.

And as the great Andrew Weatherall philosophized just became endless jars of jam on the shelf.

Different electronic path from the celebs listed - Vakula from Ukraine.

Found him on MySpace after a mate got a bunch of his early tracks. Out in the car one day, this thumping behemoth “thing” chugs through his car speakers, prompting a “what the eff is THIS?”

In the 14yrs since, he’s put out a wide spectrum of sounds, from 4x4 to experimental space jazz. Kept his head down & like any credible artist let the actual music do the talking:

Wasn't Lone a longtime member of Twoism?

A shit ton of artists started during the MYSPACE era (him included).  Although its probably chicken or egg debate for a lot of them, whether they started gaining traction before or after they were posting tracks on there.

my mind immediately jumps to specifics in cases like this - maybe it shouldnt. but like, where did he drop the mixtape? bandcamp? some rando just uploaded a mixtape to bandcamp and it got massive?

vaporwave was like this in general - vektroid ( Macintosh Plus ) and internet club met on a turntable.fm and did live stream shows on SPF420 - IIRC Liz and Chaz who ran SPF420 met vektroid via some black moth super rainbow fan messageboard

the other missing link though is tape labels circa late 00s / early 10s - that's what Floral Shoppe and Ecco Jams were both released on

(Sandy) Alex G, Bon Iver, Unknown Mortal Orchestra and RX-101 are the first that come to mind. But really, haven't most artists post-2005 started their careers online in some way/shape/form?

didn't the bieber get discovered after posting on youtube?

Ironically fucked his career right up through the internet, too.

Surprised no one's mentioned Soulja Boy yet. He's the ultimate answer to this thread.

The guy's a dick, and I tried to release his work on cassette officially, but he is constantly saying that people rip him off for no reason, like he is owed millions in royalties or something, but TONETTA is an undeniable internet sensation.  He started as a recluse paying someone else to put up his videos because he didn't have internet.   Now his LPs are going for big $$$.  https://www.discogs.com/Tonetta-Tonetta/release/7429695
