Lol yes, much more than ‘computer music’ bc at least some parameters are known ahead, like usual timbres, usual global feelings, usual percussive elements, tempos/bpm

In both cases you have to know that it’s a genre. The ignorant would think that Lightning Bolt is Drumses And Basses. What's Chiptunes? Etc.

Minor nuance of Computer Music: It's music made with computers, not on computers.

And the genre has been around since before home computers, when you only found them in academic institutions. Following "tape music" (music made with tape, not music recorded on tape) , "musique concrete", etc.

Would you say that ‘dnb’ or ‘jazz’ and ‘computer music’ are similarly well defined?

I'd say it's way more precisely defined than "jazz".

Further to zeff's question about the influence of Computer Music (or "high" culture) on popular music, this article from the quietus, ignoring the obvious agenda, is a good illustration of some influence: https://thequietus.com/articles/27692-xenakis-pauline-oliveros

While neither Xenakis or Oliveros were strictly composing Computer Music, their use of technology (and computers) and the influence they have had can't be denied.

Text of article in spoiler, in case you have troubles accessing the site, or just want to read the text.

idk maybe one could label people like hecker, yasunao tone or ryoji ikeda as 'computer music' and they are quite popular (or at least, known outside of academia)?
