nikisoko Thanks!

I think alot of this Computer Music thing is about Algoritm based music.

Always when Ae's production methods coming up as topic it Is always talk about Algorithm based music.
I saw such a rad and long introduction to Algorithm based music on YouTube and good explanation to things but I can not find it.

This is science high level really

Further to zeff's question about the influence of Computer Music (or "high" culture) on popular music, this article from the quietus, ignoring the obvious agenda, is a good illustration of some influence: https://thequietus.com/articles/27692-xenakis-pauline-oliveros

While neither Xenakis or Oliveros were strictly composing Computer Music, their use of technology (and computers) and the influence they have had can't be denied.

This is a pretty annoying article ngl. So much contemporary journalism is trying to grind this axe, trying to champion some underdog over the status quo. I don’t think it’s convincing at all here really and I don’t think the author establishes why Xenakis and Oliveros are meaningfully comparable, how their reputations have actually been established, nor is a compelling case made for why or how Xenakis is more recognized than Oliveros.

there’s definitely a sense that the author is trying to say Xenakis is one of the guys and is cool and “Trent Reznor” but Oliveros is the queer woman and thus doesn’t get recognition she deserves bc of sexism.

IMO these composers occupy entirely different spaces. When I was more into the ambient scene in like 2006-12 or so, Oliveros was referenced constantly and was an explicit source of inspiration for labels and composers. No one ever mentioned Xenakis. Otoh, in the IDM world people know Xenakis more than Oliveros. But, this makes perfect sense to me based if nothing else on the extremely different types of music they composed.

i stopped reading here: "Yet his devotees run the gamut, from Henry Rollins to Lou Reed; from Nurse with Wound to Merzbow; and from Matmos to DJ Spooky, to name only a few. "

idk maybe one could label people like hecker, yasunao tone or ryoji ikeda as 'computer music' and they are quite popular (or at least, known outside of academia)?

tru.. this how I imagine it sounding

i would define”computer music” as academic music made with computers before the dawn of home computing. this probably ended in the mid 80s. laurie spiegel was at the tail end of it. it’s obviously a stupid name NOW because virtually all music is made/recorded with a computer, but there was a couple of decades where it was restricted enough that maybe there is some coherent themes across the board.  I’d say algorithms, serial techniques, spectral music, and simple sound generators are what i personally think of when i hear this term.

there is still a lot of music that is influenced by this phase, but as john chowning said in a lecture i attended- “the ivory tower fell into our laptops”. once everyone could do this sort of music, it inherently diluted itself.

That's why I said ignoring the obvious agenda. Other than that aspect I thought it was ok. There's just not much quality journalism on the influence that I could find.

I mean, they all have talked about the influence Xenakis has played on their music at some point (well, I'm not sure about Rollins), I guess maybe it's not a gamut? I dunno, trying to spark some positive conversation instead of all the negativity that is currently swirling around Ottawa.

How about this then: Lots of sample material for someone so inclined...
