Cyanobacteria, and if I'm not incorrect, Zeff.

You are correct. These manifestations have had unique edgy ideologies to match: Zeffolia was a men's rights activist and cryptocurrency evangelist; cyanobacteria switched gears and enjoyed being a feisty militant vegan, and ilqx has focused his sights almost entirely on promoting Marxism.

There are reports now that they've already reached Kyiv. They're not fucking around.

It seemed like Russia were going to steamroll in there and take all the key infrastucture with no resistance. Videos of tanks rolling over the border and helicopters above Kyiv.

Then later that day Russia failed to take Hostomel airport. That was odd - a superpower special ops team just completely fail at something?

And we've come such a long way since then. In the last five years or so it seemed like Putin had impunity to do whatever he liked - poisoning of the Skripals in 2018 on UK soil, poisoning Navalny in 2020. These were things that the west absolutely knew Putin had done but did nothing about them. Partly because so many of our politicians have been taking donations from oligarchs. Russian funding was behind a lot of the Brexit campaign. And the whole orange man thing.

Now it turns out the Russian army is corrupt and badly organised and equipped. Turns out western governments can just seize all the Oligarchs assets if they want. Turns out Europe and the US can find the will to give up the addiction to Russian fossil fuels. Putin isn't actually a puppet-master, he's a puppet of the people around him who've been feeding him overly positive assessments of Russias capabilities.

i know when you have nothing better to talk about it may be difficult to not comment and speculate on certain topics, but let's keep the thread on the topic of "Russia is now bombing Ukraine" rather than gossip.  it's also very rude to talk about people behind their backs and results in respect levels being decreased.  thank you kind citizens

  Quote

Eleven Ukrainian political parties have been suspended because of their links with Russia, according to the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelenskiy.

The country’s national security and defence council took the decision to ban the parties from any political activity. Most of the parties affected were small, but one of them, the Opposition Platform for Life, has 44 seats in the 450-seat Ukrainian parliament.

...

The Opposition Platform for Life, Ukraine’s biggest opposition party, is led by Viktor Medvedchuk, a pro-Moscow oligarch with close ties to the Russian president, Vladimir Putin. Party officials later said the suspension “had no legal basis”.

The Ukrainian authorities last year charged Medvedchuk, a longtime ally of Putin who is believed to be the godfather of Medvedchuk’s daughter, with treason and placed the oligarch under house arrest, a move that angered the Kremlin.

...

The list of parties banned on Sunday also included the Nashi (Ours) party led by Yevhen Murayev, as well as a number of smaller parties not represented in the parliament. Prior to the start of the war, unspecified British intelligence claimed that Russia was considering installing Murayev to lead a Kremlin-controlled puppet government in Kyiv, claims that Murayev strongly denied.

what I've learned from observing this over the years is that when a person has a fundamentally broken/extremist brain process, it doesn't matter what belief system they hop to/from next, they'll fuck it up no matter what.

really great summary of the decadence and destruction that the owning class can do not just to an entire country, but to themselves as well.  i wholeheartedly support western governments confiscating all russian oligarch's capitalist's money since it will lead necessarily and materially to more rapid nationalization of russia's means of production, leaving russia in a better shape for its communist party to take over at whatever future historic point allows it.  ironically also an indicator of how the international bourgeoisie also shoots themselves in the foot, pushing russia towards isolationism by necessity, speedening the likelihood of socialist revolution and the formation of a more robust china-russia economic alliance

For someone who supposedly hates Putin you only ever seem to post articles which repeat Russian state media narratives

What's Russia gonna do if they do actually "take over" Mariupol? Rebuild it? With what money and resources? Who's ever gonna want to live there again apart from the people who have been forcibly evicted?

It feels to me like Russia wants total control over access to the Black Sea, so expect mission creep into other nations after this....

I'm a bit confused why people think he's just too young to understand things properly. He joined over 11 years ago. Was he 10 or 12 when he joined and then just went straight to deep end with MRA and cryptos?

This. Although there are examples proving otherwise. Generally speaking, people don't change (unless they're putting in the conscious effort to do so).

Access to the Black Sea? that would require seizing control over the Bosporus, which would mean going to war with Romania, Bolgaria, Greece and Turkey, which is practically impossible for Russia (they are all NATO members). Not just in military terms, but also in political terms, as it would require a commercial passage through the Dardanelles or the Aegean Sea to actually make is feasible.

They need a land route to Crimea if they want to make it strategically viable. That's why they are after the Azov land strip and the Donbass is an extra security buffer with a bonus.

Sorry zkom - I'm just going to hijack your comment as the latest in the chain - this is not directed solely at you.

If we could refrain from personal speculation on the poster and concentrate on their ideas and arguments (or lack thereof, as the case may be) I think it would be better for the community writ large. Lord knows I have my own thoughts on Zeff/Cyano/ilqx and disagree with many of things he posts, but I think I've managed (recently - maybe not so much in the past) to refrain from speculating on the individual's mental/personal state.

Just something to keep in mind.

Back to the atrocities being visited upon Ukraine by Russia:

Read somewhere that it was speculated that Putin basically wants Ukraine to be under his power and use it as buffer state (like Belarus) to act as a shield against any invasion, or influence, so that Russia remains impossible to directly invade and conquer and it's so far the best explanation for his actions and his views of the world that i've came across.

This is basically why the country of Mongolia exists between China and Russia. Communist Mongolia was a Soviet puppet state working as a buffer zone between China and Soviet Union because despite both being communist countries they really didn't get along.

But I think in this case it's more complicated that that because Putin also wanted Kyiv to be one of the centers of the new Eurasian Union he was building out of the former soviet countries and "losing" Ukraine to the west was a big humiliation. Add to that the mythology of Kievan Rus' as the mythical origin of the Slavic/Russian peoples, the importance of the Black Sea in Russian military strategy, the shock that Russians felt from the 1991 Ukraine independence referendum, Stalin annexing the Crimea to Ukraine, Donbas situation already during the collapse of the Soviet Union, etc it's a big fucking mess. I don't think there's a single strategic reason.

Yeah the mythology is strong.

I dont think many people realize nationalism is really all fairy tales myths passed down from generation to generation.

You look around, all nations think they are so special and unique for no other reason they repeat it to themselves. '' We Russians, are not like the other nations, we are special and proud to be''

Switch ''russians'' for any other country. It's all BS. Einstein was right, nationalism is an infantile disease. It's all based in self-aggrandizing delusions and myths.

Nationalism acts like a fucked up cult. Once you get delusional enough you give yourself the right to burn as many as necessary to your flag altar.

That's what Russia is all about: grabbing land and then not putting it to any good use
