Been a great year for music, at least in my eyes. One of the best in recent times. Lookin' forward to exploring this thread. Post mine in due course.

I'm still considering how to arrange all my favs, but I built this grab bag that gives you 10 albums I that I liked, at random (tho I need to add stuff from the past month), and I also just built a 2023 music critic simulator that will generate some potentially questionable opinions about music from the year, so if anyone's looking for a novel way to find stuff from this year, I think it's a fun one

Surgeon - Crash Recoil

Yamaneko - Escape artists never die

Autechre - AE live 22

Aphex twin - Blackbox life recorder extended (the ep plus other bits he put out this year been like a top new afx album!)

Shackleton - The Scandle of time

Lee Gamble - Models

Carbon Based Lifeforms - Seeker

As always I am flabbergasted by the amount of new music people here explore each year. I guess I'm mostly focused on older stuff...

Anyway my 2023 music charts go something like this :

  • Ae Live 22 (of course)
  • KNOWER - KNOWER FOREVER (awesome album)
  • OPN - Again
  • Gorillaz - Cracker Island (might be their best since Plastic Beach)
  • Actress - LXXXVIII

Honorable mentions :

  • Blur - The Ballad of Darren (very solid album, couldn't find the willpower to go back at it after they cancelled the show I was supposed to go to)
  • Aphex Twin - Blackbox Recorder (incredible tracks, the best thing was probably the WATMM hype surrounding it anyway haha)
  • Death Dynamic Shroud - Keys to the Gate

Always love this thread for catching awesome shit I've missed

Currently listening to SDEM - Vortices after seeing it on a few lists above...so good! Thanks all ❤️

Surgeon - Crash Recoil

Jpegmafia and Danny Brown - Scaring The Hoes

Overmono - Good Lies

Clark - Sus/ Cave Dog

Hudson Mohawke and Nikki Nair - Set The Roof

Aphex Twin - BBLR

Kai Campos - City Planning Deluxe

James Blake - Playing Robots Into Heaven

OPN - Again

Kamaal Williams - Stings

Joy Orbison- Archive 09-10

Pangaea - Changing Channels

Actress - LXXXVIII

Danny Brown - Quaranta

Yeah I think for me, I've always had a lot of fun focusing on the new music, though I think I found a better balance for new and old this year

This got me to 438 releases from 2023, so about 1.3 a day so far. Though I'm probably going to go wild digging through all the stuff that people mention in their lists, like I just found out about this very peculiar mix of synthy arabic popular music and jazz, so psyched for all the coming discoveries like this one

Did everyone hear the Hakushi Hasegawa single that came out this year on brainfeeder? It's less IDM-adjacent than his single from last year, but I think it should still be of interest to many ppl here

Rrose - Please Touch
Aisha Devi - Death is Home
Synalegg - Patchwork-03
Kindohm - Prompt 3
nebulo - MMXXII
3OP
AE_LIVE
Carrier's EPs
Mosca's singles

Still undecided on that Overmono album. Sometimes I play it and it hits a spot, other times I can't stand it. Would like an instrumental version. Though I guess the vocals is part of their signature sound.

I hear you. I do really love the album because it feels like its the culmination of their modern sound, and seeing the development of that sound with their prior singles was great but I do think that moving forward they need a change of sound because this type of electronic music falls intro repetition and mediocrity very easily and I feel like they are already walking a fine line when it comes to that.
