I would like both

albums and live sets

This. Also, would be lovely if they curate some of the individual tracks they played in the different iterations of their live sets. 🙏

As I thought, although I enjoyed them a lot, I haven't returned to the live sets at all. It's because the hour long wall of sound format is just too inaccesible. I listen to music in 15 minute installments a lot throughout the day, I have time to play albums in it's entirety around once a week. There is too much good and more palatable music out there for me to return to these regularly tbh. Dropping the album format altogether would probably make me degradate me from a big AE fan to just a normal one.

Agreed, big fan of both. Did we ever find out what they stood for?

I used to listen to music on a daily basis between home and work. It was about an hour per trip, so enough for a sizeable chunk of music. Being a stay-at-home dad this isn't the case anymore. And listening with kids around is no option either.

It seems Autechre isn't just computer music. It's commuter music too :dadjoke:

Just save the timestamp of where you were in the set and resume from there

The only thing I don't agree with is that SIGN and PLUS do feel to me like great albums. But that is just personal taste in the end.

They are still quite good but I always thought something seemed a bit "off" about them. A double album's worth of material released as 2 separate "proper" albums with an unusually short period of time in between, after years of longform releases in unusual formats. Also with PLUS having that jumbled feel to it, and Sean admitting in the AMA that it was kinda leftovers. With the live set/album discussion that's happening now, and the news that they've got a new and different contract with warp now, I suspect that "weird" feeling those albums have is "contractual obligation" ie they owed warp 2 more albums before they could change it up. This is mostly speculation.

i love them both but yeah, just the fact that they were both released as albums in a short space of time tells me they were ready to be done with the album-every-2-or-3-years thing

I think the tracks on SIGN and PLUS are absolutely top-tier, some of AE's best stuff ever. But their organization into album form resulted in some jarring transitions (mainly on SIGN).
