it takes a village...

Wanted to save the ambient & drone picks as playlists. The bandcamp content alone is akin to a few dozen mixes. See interviews highlighting just as much re core producers. The music knowledge in amongst threads adjacent to these subjects are rabbit holes too, idmorwhateveryoucallabroadchurch aside.

100% understand decisions, if work was more amenable to music listening it might be possible to scrape a best of but everything is community based. Happy to collaborate with anyone. The randomness is off the charts except can only really commit to an hour’s blitz each week. Still, reduces a lot to lists.

Re-reading the ZF & Coil threads are beauties for Mixl2’s rip passion & enthusiasm for the former. Couldn’t be more comprehensive with the latter. Where else has so much detail? If everyone [cue trigger warning] curated a specific subject, thread, topic, whatever, a lot of what matters to users is transferable.

Nothing is forever, everyone must have a favourite & as long as tasks arent duplicated & enough time is spread out, doesn’t seem impossible in 2025.

Genban is probably better off not getting archived tbh lol

Just save the  Dr Clitterhaus acct and fuck everything else off tbqh

Besides dank memes, I’m having a hard time thinking about which threads absolutely must be saved, although I’m sure there’s dozens. I do know for sure that I would really love to have this old one of mine archived and hopefully expanded-on on the new board …

Although it’s nice to have a place to vent, we should probably delete the “first world problems” thread tho. If resurrected, that one should probably be erased on a regular basis on the new site.

I agree here - we need to focus on the music stuff mostly - and the subforums because there is so much valuable information in there - AAA being the obvious example (although, rare pics of Richard anyone?).  

There is nothing really much of value in GenBan (dankmemes come and go - they are memes after all - and in my curmudgeonly opinion, internet memes are one of the worst things to happen to information culture) and obviously any talk about politics/economy/global affairs etc. can be binned. The what are you watching/reading/eating, recent pics, etc. threads should just start anew.

My two cents anyhow. Many thanks to @Ego for their work on this!

the dank memes thread is not just a thread with dank memes, it's the dankest meme itself in the dankverse... those posts with what might look like seemingly random memes at first are meticulously stitched togheter and they wouldn't work otherwise... there's a narrative to it...

Yes I'm aware of the work that prdctvsm and ignatius (for example) do in there - but it's all transient, and should be refreshed with a new dank start on the new site.

I mean it was most likely activity on genban that shamed joyrex into this decision in the first place (iykyk)

i'm with you on letting the general 'watching/pics/blahblahwhatever' kind of gen ban stuff just disappear. no one needs all that, but good that some of the big stuff will get cached for future research (lols & nursing home nostalgia)

not all of genban is random shit. the films, tv, video games and youtube threads for example should definitely be saved.

Why? Those are the most transient threads, full of information in the moment and recent past but not of relevance to the future or for historical purposes. No one needs to know what the fuck chenGOD was watching in the third week of June 2023, and his opinions on that.

I'm also going to hope that we don't vote to pin those threads at the new place. There are so many pinned threads here that should be unpinned - they've either run their course or they shouldn't have been pinned in the first place.

The most recent artwork should be archived, along with pics you took that you're pleased with - those are great contributions from the members of the community. That's the kind of stuff I love to see from the members here (aside from the music-related stuff).

We can bin the football forum as well - I love it, but it's really dead, and doesn't really fit the community anymore - and that's fine. We just need a single thread trolling spurs.

hard disagree, if the pinned threads don't continue on into the third or even fourth page, I'm not using the new forum.  what kind of sandwich did you eat recently.  what's the last bird you saw.  pictures of your docs.  pictures of your cats.  pics of your birds

for the same reason any of the genre deep dive threads or other troves should be saved. they're not transient at all. you think that discussion of a film as it came out and was being watched by people has no historical value and isn't worth saving? or people talking about, say, a hyped and much awaited game that has just been released and is being played by members? those are some of the threads that keep some of the oldest members checking in regularly when they've checked out of the subforums and routine music discussion. this place is more than just about intelligent dad music.

I also disagree about not saving the meme thread but I'd consider that lesser priority.
