Autechre Alesis MMT8

Anyone use one of these?

Apparently, they have 8 "tracks", each "track" being 16 channels of midi. That's pretty :omg: for 1988.

Also apparently, they are the live sequencer of choice for Orbital (RIP) and Autechre

i really like mine - make sure the buttons aren't too knackered tho - when they get old they can be a pain to use

step programming's a bit labourious - best paired with an HR-16 or R-8 to do drum programming

very quick, turn on, press record, start working right away... it's a lot like tracker programming - you make your patterns then you sequence the pattern play order... really great way to think about making music imo

i liked mine, but the buttons got too fucked (see above), the internal battery ran out... so no switching it off after programming your opus, and the power socket got really dodgy (so it would occasionally swith ITSELF off... bye bye opus!)

solid little sequencxer though, and you can bounce tracks as much as you like, as long as the tracks you're bouncing are intended to be on the same midi channel.

get an mmt8, an hr16 or two and get button pressin

I bought a HR16 today as it happens, the manual covers the MMT8 as well so I guess they're meant to go together. What fun this cheesy wee box is though.

the hr16 is awesome. esp with a bit of compression and some judiscious eq

well it's alesis so most likely it is crap. see buttons above comment, typical alesis crap. but the good news is that it is alesis in the 80's which was leaps and bounds better than what they are today.

btw- that alesis workstation is the biggest load of turd on the planet.

I use it sometimes, it's a good sequencer for jamming out tracks.

Orbital used about 8 of these - swore by them

Just bought one for $NZ50 (20 quid).

For that price I don't give a fuck if the buttons are had it. I'll just get another and use this as the bitzer.

the buttons can be cleaned - my dad has a hr-16 and it's in perfect condition, he just opens it up and cleans the contacts once in a while. also he built a memory expansion for it that quadruples the amount of songs you can store on it.

Yeah i just cleaned the contacts on my master keyboard which had one key dead and one not sending velocity and it's fine again now. Nice to know the MMT8 has that kind of membrane thing as well.

Yeah, I'll definitely look at the memory mod.

What kind of musics does your dad make? mp3s??

My dad's not an electronic musician really, most of his compositions are cute instrumental country tracks (he's a really good guitarist and banjo player) with the occasional vocals. I'll see if he'll let me upload some, hehe.

It arrived today!

After a clean (flyshit central), I made two retarded little patterns on it and I've been sitting here remixing those two patterns for the last hour. No manual needed, it's all in the cheatsheet under the little flap on the lid.
