Is there any way to take out the tape hiss without redoing it completeley?

There are lots of noise reduction techniques and I have a fair bit of audio restoration experience and in my opinion it could not be done satisfactorily. Either you would be left with hiss or the desired signal would be altered "unpleasantly". Anyway, hiss isn't the only issue. The higher frequencies of the tracks are plain missing and although it would be a mistake to make the remake very sparkly, clearly (in my opinion) there was more there (composed by Aphex Twin) that we're not hearing.

Lets be clear - RDJ did not compose (nor engineer or whatever you want to call it) the hiss. It was an unwanted side effect of poor mastering.

Someone suggested a remix album would be less sacreligious but for me it is exactly because every note is so perfectly composed that it needs remastering not remixing. Unfortunately i assume remastering is not possible as the original equipment and files etc are no doubt long gone (anyone looked into this?). However, faithful reengineering is possible (maybe) and I think it's worth a shot. I understand I am in the minority but if anyone wants to give it a go I for one would look forward to hearing any attempts. Unfortunatley I lack the talent to do it myself.

Abuse aside, I was fairly disappointed by the dogmatic responses (obviously). Lets hear what people can come up with before dismissing it as shit.

Nah. It's better with the hiss. It's not even hiss, it's just texture.

So no doubt whenever you listen to SAW II you add a bit of cassette hiss in to get that same "texture" you love so much. Face it - it was a mistake.

Anyway - how can you say it's better when you haven't heard the alternative?

HI,

I think the tape hiss melds sounds together in tracks like xtal. What sounds like one sound is actually 3 sounds put together. Like the breathy vocals. Xtal is a track that even my sister's friends enjoy.

If you like it the way it is, it doesn't sound like you're the "target audience".

You could take out the hiss but it wouldn't really be worth it for the ammount on SAW (very little to be honest). You'd possibly loose quite a lot of that yummy bass or other specific frequencies. Really not worth touching it at all.

Wow, you really brought out all the harmonics, so warm yet, so... moderne!

In all seriousness though, this has been done before. Kraftwerk supposedly spent years cleaning up all their albums for the Catalog box set. State of the art techniques and all that. And while it sounds great in the car, they just fucked with it too much - you can hear the processing. The box set remains unreleased. Noise reduction is generally horrible. I'd rather have analog dirt, over digital dirt.

why do people ADD hissing noise to ambient tracks today then?

It sounds very Xmassy Chris!

My housemate came in during the ending and said it sounds "cool", maybe there's a future for this dreadful idea, who knows
