Is it socially unacceptable to play live...

OK, I record music sequenced and made by hardware. I'm not about to haul my precious MS-10, MC-202, etc., out in front of possibly volatile drunk-children. So...

Is it an awful idea to play a recorded .wav file out loud to a crowd? I've considered bringing a decoy instrument or possibly a cardboard box with 1/4" jacks in it. But is this just an awful idea?

i think there's no difference between playing pre sequenced stuff with all your gear there and playing a pre-recorded .wav.

both are lame.

at the very least, strip out a track or two and play those parts live on a keyboard... or at the VERY VERY least, put part of it through some kind of processing that you can control live.

it's about interaction, otherwise the crowd may as well just listen to your record. if you have one.

yeah thats why i dinnae play live anymore, i was doing a little but not enough and i am no performer. i reckon if you can pull off putting on a perfomance of some sort then pretending to play shall suffice, theres a million pop artists that do the equivalent.

just play live, take your gear out, no body gives a shit if your playing with hardware, just make them dance they wont even take any notice of you..

but its always an amazing ammount more fun to play with hardware

Wow, some of you sound bitter! But thanks for the replies.

I honestly couldn't crank out something realtime with my things. Maybe if I had done this stuff a lot more, but the last time I played live I made up some song that ended up getting totally gross and embarrassing.

As far as gear goes... no. I'm not hauling 12 or so things outside. It's a concert of a bunch of different people, so I'm not going to even try.

I guess I'll just play a song and have a decoy, maybe. At least that's only moderately frowned upon.

stay at home, and send a CD of your music to another DJ then call it your only live appearance of the year, or just watch people doing real live shows on youtube wishing you could be bothered enough to try something similar, whilst infact getting stoned and sitting in your boxers.

sounds like the worst show ever

seriously. just insert a CDR and press play. then walk off stage...

i thought you were looking for suggestions, instead you honestly can't be arsed to download a freeware app and give a semi-proper live performance? i hope you're not getting paid.

don't listen to the haters! just do whatever you can mate - at least you'll be there that's the main thing.

personally, i find that pre-sequencing most of your stuff is a good idea to save on mistakes and embarrassment, but do the tweaking (cutoff sweeps, effects envelopes and triggers, random samples etc) live so that you look like your doing something important behind the laptop.

and wear a silly hat. always goes down well.

Ooo, yous guys are DARK.

No, I'm not getting paid. It's a chance to play live, so I thought I'd take it. I'd have no one to help me carry stuff, either.

I was just interested in hearing what you people had to say about it. I guess I can tell that it's not very much smiled upon, but I might can shuffle a little. I don't like doing much through a computer (I've tried, thanks). I've tried pre-sequenced, but I usually work with different loops of MIDI sequence, etc., and I have to have enough judgement to know when to shift, etc.

Also, thanks for the replies.
