Wooshy Zappy Thump

Think of Aphex Twin's remix of "Mindstream" or the second track on Analogue Bubblebath 1. He uses this sound for a bd type thing in those songs, in Mindstream it has a bit of a crunch. Does anyone know how to make this cool sound? If need be I can post a sample later.

Yes ... it's a classic Korg MS-20, filter-oscillation sound ... The distortion comes from having the LPF and HPF both self-oscillating, and overloading the output ... You can get a similarly zappy sound from any synth with a self-oscillating filter -- such as Junos or SH101s ... No oscillator, LPF, full-res, filter env full, ADSR all set to 0 with just decay dictating the shape of the zap .

Its actually a bit different than just simply self oscillating. The tone that is created between the two filters self oscillating actually modulates the input signal. This process is commonly known as rez beating, and is what gives us those deliciously sloppy grinding bass noises we've come to know and love.
