The Metasonix Wretch - idm in a box?

The Metasonix Wretch multipart demo

What is the Wretch?

It is an analogue monosynth stuffed with valves. Valve oscillators, vavle filter, valve e.g., valve mod section, valve output amp.

It's due out later this year, and if this demo is any indication, it sounds like any given electronic music artist's entire career.

The demo is all Wretch, with drums processed thru the Wretch's filter and e.g.

RRP $US 2,500

edit: Ok so it's pretty fucking gimmicky for $2,500. But I'm interested in the external input side of things. Still, I'd like to hear it do something subtle...

hmm. sounds pretty shit.

through the years, a man peoples a space with images of provinces, kingdoms, mountains, bays, ships, islands, fishes, rooms, tools, stars, horses and people. shortly before his death, he discovers that the patient labyrinth of lines traces the image of his own face.

whoah boards of canada fanbois will love this.

Actually, I'd have thought that Aphex, Snares, Pusher and maybe Autechre fanbois would love it, and tha BOC fanbois would say something like:

No.

The Wretch are a band. (comprising of Michael Weeks and Aeryk Negatek)

The machine is nothing do with them. It's made by Metasonix. Hence the name - Metasonix S1000.

The Wretch just use the gear, that's all.

I don't see how it's electronic music in a box. No sequencer, it's monophonic...

"Metasonix the infamous and overdrived manufacturer of weird tube effects for synths and guitars is currently finishing the last jobs on an all tube synth based on his own designs. It's not the first time Eric Barbour is going along the synthesizer way but it's his largest to date : 2 all tubes VCO, a waveshaper, a multimode VCF (Low Pass, treble/mid bandpass, and bass bandpass) all tubes (there must be somme idea behind that), 2 enveloppes A(S)R and AR, which can be combined as ADSR, a VCA featuring a Pentode, 2 LFO, and 2 modulation busses, a joystick and multiple patch points as the S-1000 is half-modular.

Note that the VCO are tracking over a Hz/V mode and that 6AL7 "magic eye" tubes give you indications on the envelopes and LFOs CVs. In all, 11 tubes are in this beast. It's pure future-retro synth in a 20 pounds fashion (mains are supplied thru an AC external adapter). My only concern is that in the available pic of the prototype, some controls are near the tubes which may end into some hot fingers… ;)

The S-1000 is a 6U, 3 inches deep beast, and should ship by mid 2006 for an expected price of $2500, an optional MIDI2CV internal interface will be available for $300."

What an evil sounding little machine! I like it, if only I had a bottomless wallet....

i wouldnt call 4 rack spaces "little" :ermm:

unless your other synth is a Jupiter 8 or something

My other synth

(honest)

(edit: I've just thought, wouldn't you need a bloody ladder to twiddle the knobs up at the top? How impractical!)

No, in fact, the words "Wretch" and "box" so close to each other made me think of "Matchbox", I guess that put the idea of it being small into my mind

No yourself, coXor. Read what it says right under "S-1000". It's a "signature model" - The Wretch are writing the manual, creating demos, and hosting the preview files I've linked to. Not exactly "nothing to do with them", Forrest

The Wretch appear to not be electronic music and also to suck, so I didnt mention them, kay?

but buying it for 2500? nahh

props to metasonix for (yet) another crazy fuckedup idea.. their other shit is really original, outlandish (and overpriced) too..

btw nice cabinets,iain

the more i think about the Wretch, the less I like it. I am reminded of the DOD Buzzbox:

fx33.jpg

A signature model for Buzz from the Melvins. Basically, it just fizzes and farts and does nothing even vaguely musical - the target audience being teenagers who wanted to be EXTREEM DOOD, as opposed to musicians.

The big difference - you can get a Buzzbox on eBay for $20

yeah it does sound mighty mighty shitty. i find tubes hilarious, mostly because the appearance of them is what makes the high price tag. that picture is fucking hilarious. I am so glad im not an analogue fag.

I was considering donating to your site.

However, I came across this.

Have tried to register as a forum user, and was ignored.

So, I'd like to offer some rebuttal.

One of your heroes, Richard James, owns basically everything we've ever made.

Unlike some of your members, Richard is not a pathetic gear whore, so he doesn't go around bragging about his collection, nor about how little money he paid for it. He apparently does use the stuff, though.

Also, perhaps your forum trolls would like to dismiss this Sound On Sound review:

http://metasonix.com/metasonixs1000.pdf

Now I have to build a pile of them. According to my UK dealer, "every rock star in Britain" has asked about buying one. Or words to that effect.

And joke all you want about the Fucking Fucker. It's selling like, well, a fucking fucker.

Thank you for the opportunity to comment.

Dunno why he's had trouble registering, but I'm going to invite him in for rebuttal.
