Dude that's terrible. I'd nominate it for the worst music from the best equipment thread, only I remain unconvinced that the Wretch Machine is "good" equipment.

They spend enormous amounts of money on the equipment. Then they spend a considerable amount of time to film and post a performance on Youtube. But they can't spend the little amount of time it would take to program a decent sequence to demo? What is that, 8 random eighth notes looping? They couldn't even use a scale? Jeez.. :undecided:

i find this to be a problem with lots of demos. is it a condition or something that testing equipment must not be even vaguely musical?

hey Eric Barbour, you got caught vanity searching on random message boards!!!!

No, I tried a search for "Metasonix Wretch" on that new search engine Cuil, and this thread came up as one of the top hits. You're entitled to your opinions, but given that none of you owns a Wretch, your comments seem to be a bit troll-ish. If you don't like it, don't buy it, your choice. You don't see me attacking Autechre or Luke Vibert, do you?

A couple of friends had some very harsh comments about this forum and its denizens, after seeing this thread. I won't post any of that, because in the final analysis, WATMM is basically a marginal fansite and doesn't really deserve more attention.

Oh, you want musical demos of the Wretch? Try the new Nine Inch Nails albums, it's all over them.

Try the new Saul Williams album. It was produced by Reznor and he used Wretch on it. It's easy to tell which tracks, nothing else quite sounds like it.

There's always the new Wretch (the band) album, for that matter....

Otolathe is using a Wretch on his new releases. Also Pepe Deluxe. Hans Zimmer has been using various Metasonix to process sounds for soundtracks. No idea what Aphex is doing with his Metasonix stuff, why don't you ask him?

There are plenty of others but I'd need some time to find them. Most serious artists USE the stuff, rather than brag about it.

No, I want demos of the Wretch that don't sound like nineties "industrial" rock made by californians with tattoos and nose piercings who use words like "extreme" and "intense" a lot. Even the positive review you posted openly called the Wretch a Nine Inch Nails box before they even knew the Nine Inch Nails had one. Most musicians can't justify $2500 for a synth that only does one thing. Most synths in the $2500 range, even vintage ones, can do a lot of things. A synth that is only bought by "rock stars" who can afford to spend $2,500 on a whim is not a hit product.

I like the idea of Metasonix products, and I'm thinking the filter or VCO modules could be a good addition to a synth rig. But Metasonix uniquely seems to perceive "tube colouration" as meaning "nasty ass clipping all the time". I find it hard to grasp the value proposition of a synth that introduces this colouration at every single stage in its signal path.

I seem to remember near identical criticism being levelled at the Wretch Machine on the Analogue Heaven mailing list. Feel free to sign up there and call them a bunch of whiney ignorant trolls.

We're entitled to our opinions, as you say, but you're on here bitching us out like we insulted you personally. Then you insulted us (albeit subtly). No one ever said ERIC BARBOUR IS A N00B TROLL ASSHAT. No one intended to insult you personally (well, before you showed up and made yourself a target). Just some people on the net talking about gear.

I can understand being pissed about someone dissing something you created, and I suspect that's why you got personal. I've been there. However, arguing won't change any minds, and makes you look like a crybaby. You have every right to get pissed at whatever you like on this planet, as long as you keep it to yourself.

From a business perspective, maybe you're worried about people "Cuil"-ing you, finding this thread, and seeing the negative comments. I can understand wanting to log on and address that, but honestly - you just made yourself look like an asshole. Your behavior here arguably makes you and your company look WORSE than if you'd just stayed above it (now you're Down In It, Mr. NIN).

tubes are providers of lovely deathly bass and operational amplification. consequently, they may not appeal to people slicing the amen break on laptops.

No matter how good your Jazz is, it won't please Death Metal fans. Insulting the Death Metal fans won't change their minds, it will only make them dislike you.

is this similar to the "bohemian grove" Dave Wright (not breathing) built a while back? (Eric designed that too), if so that device sounded pretty cool at some points.

Ctrl+f "bohemian grove" listen to those examples. I'm assuming his synth is almost the same design and it sounds pretty cool at times.

From what I recall him telling me, it wasn't Eric's design, I think he just used a lot of Eric's circuits (VCO VCA whatever). I could be wrong.

P.S. - I linked Dave this thread last night, dunno if he looked.

P.P.S. - Any time I mention NIN to the D, he gets very testy, and expresses his, er, severely negative impression of them. However, he loves the Metasonix stuff. Curious what he'd make of Eric's post here...

Apparently our 'marginal fansite' was enough to elicit a response, and whether you would have carried through with it, a donation as well - do you always donate to 'marginal' fansites, Mr. Barbour, or just the ones that sing the praises of your products?

I'm not a musician, nor is my knowledge of musical equipment sufficient for me to render an opinion of your product or it's pricing, so I'm not going to touch that, although you seem to be well informed as to what makes a fansite 'marginal' or not, so obviously you've been running successful and popular websites for the better part of a decade like me, and can categorize this one as 'marginal' with confidence.
