Aphex Twin taught in Ivy League

Recommended Posts

I attended Dartmouth College, which is one of the eight Ivy League colleges/universities in the US, from 1996 to 2004 (too many degrees). Dartmouth has an electro-acoustic music program, which is pioneered by a guy named Jon Appleton. They actually offer a degree in electro-acoustic music for those interested in seriously pursuing a career in electronic music and music technology.

More information about Jon can be found here:

Anyways, a buddy of mine actually took classes within the electro-acoustic music program there, and he told me that Jon was teaching about Aphex Twin. He referred to him as a "virtuoso". He said there are those that are merely good at making music, and then he said there were those that were just absolutely genius and much, much better than the pack of musicians most people would consider 'good'. And he actually played some of the non-prepared-piano songs from Drukqs for the class and made them all sit there and listen to it.

I wish I could have been in that class and experienced that in person.

In September, 2005 Mr. Appleton announced that he would be leaving Dartmouth at the end of the 2005-06 academic year for a visiting position at Stanford University, citing as his reasons the administration's failure to "curb grade inflation, reduce class size and stay on the cutting edge"

interesting.

Every big college does that shit. They're afraid to piss off people who paid $30k a semester for the privledge of attending. From my experience with several friends at big name schools, it's retardedly simple to get a B (much easier than high school work), and almost impossible to consistently get A's.

oh? so lecturers seem to just hand out Bs by default fairly irrespectively of the quality of the work?

For the most part. You'd have to put in some type of effort for the B though, to keep apearances up and all, but really those big name schools are first of all scared of students who are their future endowment and are also paying $200,000+ for the privledge of attenting, and second of all scared of losing face in academic rankings by having them do poorly.
