Autechre Where do I start?

Guys, I, admittedly, know very little about Autechre. They've always seemed too daunting for me. Now I'm getting some new headphones this weekend (AKG 240s) and I finally want to take the plunge. What's a good mindblowing initiator to Autechre?

wait until you're getting some new LSD the next weekend.

I'd start with Tri Repetae++ personally. I feel like it's the bridge between their earlier melodic work and their more experimental stuff.

If you're feeling a bit braver, go for LP5, as that's my favorite record of theirs by far- though maybe less accessible than Tri Repetae++

would agree about tri rep. 'tis the first autechre i got into myself.

oh, and: about 100 micrograms.

A good bet would be to go chronologically - start with incunabula or amber and work your way forward (don't forget the EPs - some of their best stuff!)

I agree with disavowed, lp5 is def my favorite!

exactly, work your way up chronologically. something in the lines of: incunabula > amber > garbage > anvil vapre > tri repetae >etc.

its their best imo.

I don't necessarily want to start at the most accesible.. if anything, I want the most difficult intense shit they have.

whatever you do, dont start with their Untitled album. I got this when it first came out and just couldn't appreciate it.

If you only want to listen Autechre's music for the sound quality with your new headphones, go with Draft 7.30

That's the thing about ae, they're consistent as hell to some and very divisive to others. The one most people agree on is LP5, that album even made a top 20 albums of all time list by some big retailer. Might be the best one to try, but honestly their albums differ so greatly it's silly to judge them on just one album, I recommend getting Tri Rep, LP5 and Confield to see how much they vary between releases, if you like all of them then you're in for a treat with pretty much every album!

i am in the same situation. after checking previous topics about this, i concluded to enter bleep.com and check every autechre release for something pleasant. finally i've decided for Untilted as a start.

This is probably your best bet. But in my case, I got Chiastic Slide before any of these and really enjoyed it. But you pretty much need every autechre release you can find ya.

i did already!

all of their releases are good or excellent

I would do it in order of release date (incunabula-amber....)

but probably it works either way

my favs are confield, chiastic and lp5

but all of them are far superior to anything else ever released by anyone except for afx maybe

there is not really a usual everyone's favorite when it comes to ae... I guess it would be LP5 if it existed.

For the best headphone experience try confield or draft.

Awesome advice. I'll try those three out first.

Funny how enlightened people have become about LP5. With the benefit of hindsight and everything else that came after, LP5 seems a bit tame...But at the time of its release a lot of fans were like wft?? I ain't down with this schizz...Autechre lost the plot/disappeared up their ass/ect. (I actually do think this happened a bit, but it wasn't until Confield).

i still haven't listened to LP5.

it will wait until i have $$$ for more CDs and a album-sized block of uninterrupted time.
