the more i listen to this album, the more it just makes me passive aggressively angry at the band. i was under the impression that adrian utley (or whatever his name is) was a crazy, obsessive perfectionist. like, to the point that they had an entire 2nd album in the can that he completely scrapped and started over from scratch before finally releasing the self titled album. i'm not, however, hearing any of that on this record. i keep desperately searching for some depth to the music and it simply is not there. sonicly, its incredibly flat and conceptually it just meanders around the land of mediocrity with no sense of direction or purpose. this album honestly sounds like it was thrown together over a long weekend. it sounds more like cat power trying to be edgy than it sounds like the return of portishead. i don't have any preconceived notions of what their music should sound like these days, but a 10 year hiatus is a really long time to develop a new and interesting sound...apparently nobody in the band spent any of that time even thinking about the future of portishead.

unless you're really easily impressed or desperate for something new to listen to, i'd recommend skipping this one.

at last the truth.

strikes me that this album is getting so many good reviews because journo's don't want to look like uneducated fools in front of their peers. emperor's new clothes.

this album is shit.

This is my favorite album of '08 so far. I love the way they take modern equipment and make it sound like it was recorded in an era before the equipment was even invented. I wouldn't say it's as boundary pushing as Dummy was when it was released by any stretch, but it's still quite original, doesn't remind me of anything but Portishead. I've read a lot of reviews going on about how they've "completely reinvented themselves" and how Beth vocals is the only thing identifying it still as Portishead, which is total BS. The treatment of the sound is still undeniably Portishead, musical ideas are much as one would expect, there's just a few new elements integrated into it. Overall it's my favorite album they've done so far. I really hope they don't go on another 10 year hiatus.

finally bought this recently. never downloaded the leak. took me ages yes. on first impressions it is pretty half baked. the production is rubbish. like "i got some vintage synths now hear this" *helicopter noise*. i'm hoping that the songs actually shine through over a few listens. machinegun is the track that annoys me most, you can hear the guy going "like this effect?" "and this one?" towards the end. some tracks i already like very much like 'deep waters' and 'we carry on' the rest not so much

yes i'm late again

Guest Deep Fried Everything

i'm gonna side with logan and the haters on this one.

i've listened to it a few times through, and it sounds to me like a completely different band. i guess what i liked most about portishead was the melodic elements of their tracks, a few of which i realize were lifted directly from samples, but still. there's not even the slightest hint of jazz or groove in most of these songs, and for me that's the whole reason i like(d?) the band.

oh well. at least they gave it a shot.

amazing album.

seems most of the folks that don't like it are unreasonably attached to portishead's history.

if you're not and you still don't like it, that's cool too. :undecided:

but it's amazing.

and machine gun is practically the best track ever made. visceral and moving and yet strikingly simple. brilliant, brilliant production on that one.
