Still my favorite thing they've done, and I loved Dummy. Didn't care for their second album so much. That one was experimental without being particularly interesting. This one's got it all. I hope I get a chance to see them live.

I wanted to bump the thread because I don't listen to this album too often but every time I do I think it's unique. It's deep, it doesn't care of fitting in any genre, it's sometimes harsh (the cuts in some tracks are great ^^), and also sometimes so sweet.

Talking about the band not caring about fitting to a musical genre for the album, I especially love the way they don't give a priority to any instrument. There are just different instruments, voice and guitars and whatever included, and they all play on different levels depending on the song. The incorporation of the electronic sounds is perfect. You don't hear the synths and samples as synths and samples but just as a part of this dark and deep whole.

love

yeah this album grew on me so much. its easily the album i reach for most of theirs. saw them live recently too at an outdoor venue and it was incredible.

yeah..i wasn't too familiar with them before "third", but i tried checking their earlier stuff, it all seemed very weak and insignificant in comparison to this one.

I am not a fan of Dummy at all, at the time it came out EVERYONE was playing it and it got on my tits.

You should check out the Live NYC album, that's really fucking good.

It's seductively creepy, and there needs to be more things like that. I love Dummy and the self titled, but for totally different reasons.

Third and the live album are epic, top-shelf Portishead.

Third always reminds me of an old English haunted house by the coast. Isolated and creepy.

I bought this at the beginning of the year and was a perfect soundtrack to what was a very difficult time for me. I think this album will always be very special for me because of this.

I can definitely imagine how this album could fit with a difficult time of one's life. Hope it won't be wasted for you in case you automatically link it with that time every time you listen to it.

Also, that might sound like bullshit but I identify the darkness of this album as the one of the times we're going through. Like there's something political in Third.
