I just think its weird that watermarked promos are going out to record stores. It just seems like there'd be a lot of those, and that the process would be expensive, to such a degree that it would be more than any sort of potential financial losses from a pre-release leak.

they're on a per request basis as far as i know.

its very similar to a dog pissing on a tree he passes on his daily walk. he does it so that other dogs know who's tree it is.

pure speculation: it's either different track-times (nobody posted the lengths of the tracks yet) which guarantees that each leak can be traced back to its owner. problem is that each copy has to be uniquely made (costs much - how many promo copies are there? 100? 500?)

or it's some sort of magical formula inside the music which won't disappear in the ripping process (whether lossy or lossless). the only magical formula would be to add some extra sounds. and yes, again each copy has to be made individually

the watermarking thing is total BS and a scare tactic for so that people will be too afraid to leak it.

if the CD promo copy is a glass mastered CD and not noticeably a CDr than obviously a label like Warp would not have the resources or the means to make a unique glass mastered professionally manufactured cd for each promo copy.

i really truly think this is a psychological deterrent rather than a real system. Why watermark the actual cds when you can just say you did and scare people to an equal degree?

actuaslly godel, it would be prudent for a pressing disc manufacturing company to offer, say, a package to labels producing tens of thousands of copies of a cd that is basically the production of a number of promo copies featuring digital watermarking, each promo copy being digitally numbered. hence leaks can be traced back to the person whom the promo was issued.

it's very simple, feasible, and quite smart for a pressing company to offer for a label.

it's just like a product key for software. you can generate thousands of serial numbers and still have each one designated it's own serial.

unique codes on the disc would only hold someone from actually selling it on ebay. ripping would be no problem, and the leak would not be traceable.

if these watermarks can be heard, yes that would be a problem. if a normal listener can't hear them, those sounds will be lost when you create mp3s. mp3-encoders are made to drop everything normal listeners wouldn't hear.

perhaps i don't understand what you mean. but whatever it is, if you don't want to leak, don't do it. (although i'm sure others will think differently)
