if you're still open to suggestions, i think it should go like this:

people state they will participate.

rook / squee keep that list of participants

rook /squee prepare the 20? segments

segments are assigned to the list that volunteered through PM.

multiple people will get the same scene, i hope.

when all tracks are in, rook /squee/whoever else? pick which tracks will work together

if a scene gets multiple entries and none of them work:

ask one of the others who managed to pull off a decent scene if they'd like to handle that scene.

also, i don't think opening this competition up would do any harm.

it's the final result that's important i think, and giving talented people a reason to join and participate in this community is a good thing. even if every entry came from some new member that no one knows, it would still be something that started and was put together on WATMM.

Yea, I thought of that idea as well. I am personally torn between the desire to create the best possible final result even if it means cutting some people out, and having it as a more friendly sort of collaboration even if some scenes aren't as good as others. Also, a practical problem with assigning more than one person to a scene, is that it would make collaboration much more difficult since I had planned on providing a list of who has what so people could collaborate if they had say, the same character in their scene and they wanted to create a common theme/sound or something.

Right now, I think Squee and I are going to do our best to as soon as possible cut the movie down into what we feel are manageable scenes. And then figure out more after that. It may turn out that we have more scenes than anticipated and everyone can join in but may have to do shorter tracks. It also may turn out that we have fewer scenes than anticipated and we will have to work it out from there. Regardless though, some people are going to have longer scenes than others just based on my first run through of about half of the movie.

And if anyone knows how to work timecodes or whatever they are talking about, let us know.

A/D: no one knows what the original framerate was, or how it was meant to be screened. But according to wiki, the original framerate was most likely 16 frames per second, but a documentary by Kino suggests that it may have been filmed at 25 frames per second. The digitally restored version plays at 25 frames per second. Which means that the action plays out faster than it would in reality.

i would not complain if i got a 3-4 minute slot.

3 minutes is enough time to do something cool with i think, any less than that and you begin to take away the manner in which i progress through form as i write a piece of music.

To those of you who aren't on the list yet please PM me because it's a lot easier to keep a track on PMs than having to read through every post :)

Much love,

Nicolas

Will be taken into consideration. No guarantees though.

Got about halfway finished today. Hopefully will do more tomorrow.

I also strongly suggest to anyone who is doing a preliminary watch over the movie, to not watch it with the sound on. It helped give me some ideas while I was watching today.

I don't think its possible that the original frame-rate is 25 fps. In 1926, almost all of the cameras ran between 16 fps and 23 fps (a 24fps model was made in 1925, but I doubt they used that because you can see the speed in Metropolis is a bit sped up... thus hinting at a slower frame-rate... slower frame rate = faster playback speed). If it was shot on a hand-cranked camera, then the frame rate would be most likely inconsistent.

It doesn't really matter though because NTSC video is always 23.976 fps. As long as we all keep that in mind, we should be fine.

Either way, we could sync by eye. no biggie. It's only music.

Progress is being made.

Anyone with any suggestions on how to embed time codes or whatever and send out the videos, please PM me or Squee. Otherwise, it will probably just get cut up in iMovie and posted on google video or something or sent out through some sort of filesharing buisness which I don't really know how to do either of those things but will figure it out.

it could be PAL which would make sense with the 25fps version mentioned above? who knows. cats and jeff and me probably have a thing about "DOING IT RIGHT" but we could just do it by eye/ear. though it would make transitions a lot easier to have precise numbers, whatever

could I perhaps complicate matters by asking to remix a track created for metropolis and submit that as my entry?

This could work for the credits as a soundtrack mashup where you remix either one or more of the new tracks from the WATMM soundtrack.
