Draft 7.30

Recommended Posts

Hello to everyone!

This is a thread about how I have mixed opinions about this album. You see, on one hand I think it's incredible and on the other hand I think it's mind blowing. I think it's delicate, it sounds as if it's going to fall apart at any time, yet it's pulverising and somehow beautiful.

So come around! Share your opinions on this album of Autechre! All opinions are welcome!*

ive never changed my opinion so drastically of an album, first few listens to draft i felt it was pretty average for an AE album. It took me quite a while, almost a year after it came out to really apprecite it. it is now one of my favorites. If cofield was made to make your brain melt, as sean booth has said, then Draft was designed to make your brain implode.

definitly had a big impact on my own music, it was a big inspiration on my first electronic cd.

Well said. And I agree. (Edit: Wait, I don't agree, I loved it on first listen. But I can see where you're coming from. I agree with the brain implosion thing)

We should all speak in metaphors.

Draft 7.30 is like Burt Reynolds driving a truck full of liquid awesome into a colony of Clint Eastwood clones and blowing up the lower part of Africa (South Africa)

Guest Rook

I am with GBIII. First listen, I was immediately drawn to a couple of tracks, mainly Surripere and Reniform Puls. But it was no where near Confield for me. Perhaps I was a little disappointed because I was secretely hoping for an extension of Confield or Gantz Graf.

This album now I realize is a masterpiece. Just the other day I was listening to Xylin Room, it was seriously killing me. That transition four minutes in or so is one of the most emotional bits on any piece of music ever for me. And then into the second track, it's like it's ripping at my innards. And that modular synth in 6.1e. Surripere is epic.

The last four tracks in succession are still my favorite bits. Fantantabulous. And the best AE packaging as well. Love my vinyl copy. I've got a small scratch on the back cover though, which is depressing.

I think Draft was so good that it was bad for electronic music. No offense meant to you GBIII, but I hear a lot of Draft inspired electronic music, and nothing ever comes close. It all ends up sounding stale.

My fourth favorite AE album, and continues to get better with every listen.

i actually havent heard that much, most of the AE imitations seemed to stop at Ep7 style , besides Syndrone which was clearly inspired by Confield, perhaps a little too much. if you dont mind could you point me in the direction of some, even though it may sound stale im just curious.

I didn't mean in composition style or anything. I meant in the way that they do the harsh digital noises and the more harsher percussion. I hear stuff like that in Team Doyobi. But obviously the synth sounds are way different.

I couldn't disagree more with that comparison. I don't think either pair are at all comparable.

i dont really see it either, especially in relation to Draft. i mean sure team doyobi is heavily AE influenced.

i frankly wish more electronic musicians would try to imitate Draft instead of trying to imitate Anlord and Music has the right to children

This album is truely unbelievable in every sense of the word. Listening to this album loud, on headphones in the dark = indescribly beautiful insanity.

I'M SORRY FOR BEING ME I CAN'T HELP THE WAY I AM

draft is my favourite ae album by a long shot. just sems so focussed qand has a unifying sound. a good mix of rhythmic tracks and more abstract, sound-design pieces.

can't see a similarity with team doyobi either, as their sound is generally more 8-bit electro to my ears. i find artists who copy autechre seem to emulate their 90s output..... people like arovane, funsturong etc sound a bit like tri repetae or lp5.

Like The Tuss?

To answer the thread seriously, Draft 7.30 was Autechre's first release that made me discover their post-LP5 era. I didn't like most of the tracks at first but I knew I would love them afterward. I think this is the album they made most effort to produce, to be honest. Every single sound is so detailed and fits perfectly.

exactly, it seems most people find autechres post Ep7 stuff to mind bending to even attempt , where as something like LP5 with all the advent of software FM synthesis VST plugins and freely available maxmsp patches its not too hard to recreate that style.

Thing is that while other artists may be able to create a similar sound, they'll never be able to approach the music with the same perspective that AE do, which is why it often ends up sounding so empty and pointless.

Not to mention shit.

I don't really like Confield but I think this album is beautiful in it's own way, I also like Untilted, but Draft seems to be built around emotion a bit more which I like.

I just discovered I find the melody of 'Theme of Sudden Roundabout' somewhat reminiscent of Drukqs, good track in any case.

As much as i despise 90% of the content of this thread i will say that i think after listening to VL AL5 on repeat last night i think it's the best Ae tune of the last 5 years. Its packed with detail under the surface that I never noticed until last night.

Caralaaaaaan......God is in......his holy temple........

I actually liked this album and found it easy to listen to from the off. Surripere would justify it's existence alone even if the rest of it was shit (which it most definitely is not). A really impressive album, I'd say.
