oval....

Recommended Posts

i wonder the lack of threads & few words on oval (m.popp)here, he do not release much these days but his records are still great (noisy, moving, complex, simple @ the same time). just weird, watmm has shit loads of threads like "ever piss while listening to autechre?" or nerdy craps or endless threads about ae's best records (still my favorite band tho) but almost nothing on oval. if he was on warp or planet µ i'm sure more people would get into his sounds.

big up to the oval!!

its 2 cds for the price of a drink!!

a bit sad that oval seems now a bit forgotten...

well i like this remix but most oval pre1998 were process of kind of ambient sounds (Systemisch trx [done in 1994!!] are reworking/ process of aphex SAW2), while later he worked on layers of noises, brass, guitars sounds but still melodic.

  • 1 year later...

http://totem.menneske.dk/batch_totem/BIN/%...opp_Lecture.mp3

old news (recorded in 2002)

but :

http://www.ina.fr/grm/#

then go to "web radio" > "reportages de concert" > "saison 2006" > "Présence électronique - 10/06/06", you'll get an mp3 with a live extract (edited) from markus popp

i just hope he'll put out some some new record, he has been quiet these days.

oval is amazing. |

im still trying to wrap my head around how he did ovalcommers

its like noisey distorted bursts of constantly changing timbred synthesizers doing melodic ambient music, a very interesting combination that works wonderfully. It is too bad a followup to commers was never done because i think that album is perfect.

Dok is also a good work, although not my favorite, 94 Diskont & Wohnton were very groundbreaking when i heard them. Wohnton i think was one of the first electronic/rock crossovers i heard that resembled what Radiohead later did.

anyway, yeah ovalcommers needs its follow up... me too the first time i heard ovalprocess, i was suprised by the melodic/noise "natural"or organic progression.

Yeah, bought this a few years ago. Very warm and strange. Thrill Jockey sent me a promo poster for it as well. I have it on my wall. Very nice album artwork as well.

ah ok, coz there was a poster in the sleeve mentionning farmersmanual, sote etc... so i thought it was the vinyl version of the GIII compilation.

its weird because there were 2 cds i couldnt find in online shops : the "ensemble" one on rephlex & the "so" one. both are quite similar in terms of sound & if you type either "ensemble or "so" on amazon, you'll get 2545866 answers like "art ensemble of tobago" or peter gabriel, kenny rogers or megadeth.

i heckled from the front row of a very melancholy jim o'rourke solo gig

"YOU NEED MARKUS POPP!!!"

(markus handled the glitchy electrics on gastr del sol's awesome "camofleur" lp)

to which o'rourke countered

"no - YOU need markus popp buddy"

what a faggot

i  oval

I only have 94 diskont. And I honestly dont listen to it that much. I mean it is cool and all. But I am rarely in the mood for it. Is there one better than this that I should try??

hmm, all his releases are pretty different from one another

i would suggest for his more ambient works check out Ovalcommers

if you want something a little more poppy that laid a lot of ground work for glitch music in general check out Whonton.

the So album has a japanese singing in french on it. I find it to be alot warmer than most of the Oval stuff.

just checking out this release, it doesnt sound nearly as 'fresh' as as anything else hes done. A lot of this guitar processed gltichy ground has been treaded by Chris willits and fennesz many times over.

Amp was a great show. I remember a great video that just showed footage of people looking at stuff in a flea market/swap meet (carboot sale for you Brits in here) and have never figured out whose video it is.
