the anti-reverb thing, i feel the need to bring it up

Recommended Posts

in a previous watmm there was a thread in which most people disapproved of the use of reverb effects in electronic music. it was suggested that only long release was acceptable, not sure if delay or chorus were approved.

there was also a thread in which people dismissed stereo in electronic music as a 'gimmicky effect' (but recording instruments for certain music it was said not to be). lee perry was quoted, 'one love, one channel' or some shit.

but why? why should a synthesizer sound like an instrument recorded in anechoic chamber? furthermore, if the initial sound is synthesised, why not use a synthesised reverb in synthesised stereo? surely it's makes sense to synthesise everything.

but anyway, it would be cool to take a synth to a big hall and record it.

ps. as long as you have spring and plate reverbs you can use as much as you want!

no reason to avoid it

i think some feel tempted to reverb everything which is like music in soft focus.

as long as not all instruments are out of focus, reverb can be used to add nice depth or just to bleed an instrument into empty spaces.

but then even the above could be totally disregarded and still be awesome

context

i don't understand anything about this. but why limit yourself with arbitrary rules some nerds on the internet came up with?

the biggest illusion is yourself

reverb can be tricky... its easy to make sounds muddy and take up a lot of space in the mix.

i try to use it sparingly, in fact, most of my tracks, you'd think i wasn't using any at all.

but the saying still goes... if it sounds good, then it sounds good.

im of the persuasion that simply using a reverb or a delay on a sound to give it a 'stereo' feel is a poor way to achieve that effect. imo its almost always a polishing the turd exercise. In my own stuff i tend to try to record samples either through field recording or instrument micing always in stereo its a rule for me. I never record in mono, why? because i dont want to have to ad effects later to give it more 'space' i like the natural feel of real acoustic stereo. Also when i use synthesizers i try to find ones like Absynth that have built in a very conducive atmosphere for making multi channel and even surround sound synthesizer textures WITHOUT the aid of reverb. Im not saying that people who use fake reverbs all the time suck, i just personally prefer an actual room reverb or a stereo source to begin with. The obvious simulation of the effects takes me out of the experience sometimes. An album that uses digital reverb to a great effect i think is Quaristice, it never comes off as cheesy to me in that lp.

people who say exploiting the stereo field is a 'gimmick' are just closed minded fucks

Reverb can be used to great extent to create emotional sounds and to create the feeling of listening to music in a certain "space" (see: Shpongle, especially the first album).

I'M SORRY FOR BEING ME I CAN'T HELP THE WAY I AM

No reverb is a pretty idiotic rule. No tasteless reverb I can understand, but it's rare that I ever hear a good completely reverb-less mix. Though that can be really effective too if done right. Whoever said electronic music shouldn't ever have reverb is silly.
