Amber

I fucking love it. It seems to me that there are two schools of thought on this one. It's some of the best, or just gets passed by to other more complex stuff like LP5.

I was listening really close the other night and really picked up on the complexities of Montreal and Slip. Both are fuckin ace. I love that really low second kick in Slip on the upbeat. Further really opens my head up too. There are some weak spots, i.e. ending of sliverside. Wow it's lame.

So your thoughts? a stepping stone on it's way to Tri Rep or one of their best releases?

Album that got me in to Ae. Awesome. Come on folks.....think about it....

Foil is the perfect atmosphere setter for an autechre album.

Montreal has an amazing chilled out but slightly foreboding vibe to it.

Glitch is ultra-autechre.

Piezo has the loneliest ending of any song ever.

Yulquen is incredibly relaxing, lovely song to leave on loop for a bit at the end of a busy day.

Nil is just amazing. Totally amazing. That bit at 3:30 makes the hairs stand on end......

......and Teartear is the perfect ending. Dark and brooding.

The other songs are great as well, but these ones really stick out to me. How anyone could think that this isn't one of ae's best records is beyond...but each to his own...i very rarely listen to Tri Repetae.

For me it's the first real Autechre album.

Yeah me too.

Incunabula is just clever techno, and some cool bass hits. Amber is sooooo much more. It's got that Autechre ambience about it. For me Amber sounds like the music of the stars, beamed down to earth. It's got so much space in it, especially nine and further. It's great night time listening.

By the way, that part of the beat in Slip that starts at 0:53 is something you hear in a lot of old music from AFX as well I think

I had written something more detailed yesterday and then decided not to post it since I thought it was obvious to everyone. I kinda regret that now, but anyways - I prefer Amber over Incunabula. I think both albums have a very wearisome atmosphere, not in the negative way, it just really has to be the right time to listen to them. I can think of a lot more occasions to play Untilted (probably my favourite amongst the new-style-albums) than Amber or Inc, even though they're simpler. The mood is just very lugubrious, and that's remarkable. Incunabula's more of a stepping stone than Amber imo. Amber seems more like their take on another direction they only returned to with tracks like Paralel Suns lately. Also I think I've said all that before somewhere, but I won't delete it this time to break the vicious circle.

I always struggle to decide what my favourite Autechre album is, because normally I think of LP5 and Chiastic Slide. But I like AMber just as much, if not more so. But it's so different, it's like it's not even the same band, and so I never compare it.

But needless to say, it is an almost perfect album. The only track I don't like at all is Nil which I usually skip.

Montreal is amazing, it's one of those songs that sounds like the word "Autechre"

Slip is pure happiness, I can't believe they made a song this warm and playful

Peizo and Further are so beautiful and epic

Yulquen is one of the most relaxing and hypnotic tracks ever

And Teartear is just crushing, it's like they've created an amazing, perfect kingdom, and then they just destroy it so you can't experience it for more than an hour at a time.

I always felt Amber was about the ocean. Probably because of the cover art. Which, by the way, is why I bought the album. It was my first Autechre and the beginning of a decade-long addiction. I still find it easier to fall asleep to this album than anything else though somehow I wouldn't exactly call it ambient.

Montreal is the best post-emotional-goodbye travel song I can think of. Mellows me out and puts my game face back on at the same time. Initially I liked Nil the best and now I think it's cheesy and corny and it sorta grates on my nerves. Also I skip Yulquen unless I'm trying to sleep. I love all the rest of it, even the ridiculous end of Silverside which reminds me of Mario 64. Totally agree with Springymajig about Teartear, it's just rude enough of an awakening.

Also, I didn't really appreciate Garbage until a couple years ago when I realized that the cover art was a glitched-out version of the Amber cover art and that it represented some kind of reinterpretation of it. As is often the case with Autechre, now that I understand the connection I appreciate both more.
