I never noticed before just how great Teartear is. It's become one of my favourite Amber tracks alongside Foil, Piezo and Further.

I was listening really close the other night and really picked up on the complexities of Montreal and Slip. Both are fuckin ace. I love that really low second kick in Slip on the upbeat. Further really opens my head up too. There are some weak spots, i.e. ending of sliverside. Wow it's lame.

 

So your thoughts? a stepping stone on it's way to Tri Rep or one of their best releases?

Montreal is my favorite Autechre track. Makes me want to jizz in my pants almost every time.

the best amber track is clearly nil.

Nearly every track is great, Foil, Further, Piezo, Nine, Montreal, Glitch.

All of them amazing, only Silverside is horrible and Nil is not that good.

It's my joint fave with Untilted, there must be something similar about those two, I'm not sure what though.

Nil is pretty corny although it was my favorite when I first heard Amber...14 years ago. I don't think Silverside is horrible, the thing they do with the delay is actually pretty cool. But the strings are about as cheesy as Autechre gets.

Also agree about Teartear... I used to turn it off after "Nil" and lately I really dig Teartear. Pretty unique vibe, like on an aircraft carrier out on some evil mission in the middle of the ocean.

I guess it's because no other Autechre album embodies so well their talent to write proper music (i.e. melodies, w/ harmony etc.) I mean they wrote so much beautiful music - but every time it seemed like they couldn't resist but mix it with some "hardcore" sonic explorations and sound shapes. Amber is the only album where you get the essence of Booth and Brown composition skills ! (cf. Nil, Slip, Teartear, Piezo, Nine...).

I liked this album and then I heard it with headphones and it became even better - Foil has probably the best atmosphere I've ever heard in any track, and Yulquen is just SUBLIME.

Slip seems to be a love or hate, but I love it, it reminds me of an instrumentsal Rod Stewart song.

My favourite Autechre album. I remember when it first came out and instantly loving it [then as time passed I started to appreciate different tracks] it sounded futuristic, atmospheric, beautiful. I had it on a loop for ages. It was a deep and fascinating album for me at the time.

amber is one of my favorite ae albums (top5 probably) but i still think this

for me, the holy trinity of Amber are Slip, Piezo and Nine.. with special mention to Foil and Montreal.

I don't understand the love/hate issue with Slip on here. How any AE fanatics could disregard it as weak i do not comprehend. Goz has layers and nice and simple keys, which is what i love about the minimal stuff they've released. I'm guessing whoever thinks Slip is weak, also thinks Tri Rep is weak too. I like it because it was probably the most accessible AE track i listened to, but after the initial instant gratification of the sound, i started to realized how much depth it had. Very emotional harmonic sound creeps in on the first minute, which makes the track for me, and a melody of keys that seem to morph and vibrate into something closer to a wind, or brass sound... half way, when the melody stops and then fades back in with extreme subtlety is perfect.

Piezo has one of the most stellar beats ever, and like with Slip, the emotion is created by the slow onset of the harmonic synth sound, which is intense. A headphone favorite, and agree about how awesome Foil sounds with headphones

And also agree that Nine is a timeless ambient classic. If i could only pick 2 from Amber then it would have to be Nine and Piezo.

never got into Silverside, although it reminds me of the film Eyes wide shut. Lost a lot of interest in Nil after thrashing it for years, and Teartear reminds me of the music in the game Halo.... like when the shit's about to hit the fan... All in all a great album, but not perfect like i think Oversteps is. First real AE album? pffft! Incunabula's last 3 tracks alone make it real enough for me

One track [Edit: Piezo] has a high frequency sine which I cannot hear any more: frustrating.

As this is my 1st post in the ae forum, I thought it best to start where it all started for me - Amber. A great album of it's time. Yes, nostalgic. Best to leave it there, the real deal only got going with Chiastic Slide...but I still hear echoes of it today (nth Dafuseder.b).
