Guest catsonearth
started playing over the weekend. it was a bit weird to get used to at first, especially after playing 'dead space', which was a highly controlled, linear game (not necessarily a bad thing). for awhile i felt a bit lost, but once i got into it (and read the manual a bit) i was feelin' it. but that's the thing, you pretty much have to read the manual to understand all the finer details of the game, like monitoring your radiation levels and whatnot. there's a lot to take in. even moreso than in oblivion, i'd wager. i haven't learned how to build things yet though. is this a skill you gain along the way that you have to train for or is it something that automatically happens when you've acquired all the necessary components to create something? ps. is there any way to peep your character at will? i'm not really seeing the point of having all this cool wasteland fashions to choose from if you can't even see what it looks like on your character. in third person you can only see your character's backside. wtf? and why spend all that time customizing the character if you can't ever see the damn thing? at least in oblivion you could check them out in the menu screen. am i missing something here or is this not an option in this game? Guest Iain C
Hold down the button that switches camera views, and you can swing the view around/zoom with one of the sticks and take in that beautiful pre-war springtime dress you're wearing. And there's no skill in building, but you need to find schematics and a workbench Quote Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/39419-im-leaving-watmm/page/4/#findComment-873435 Share on other sites
Guest awkwardsilence
Yeah, for most skills you really want to make a choice about which ones, what you want to do, and max them out. Building things though is just a matter of having the recipe and the ingredients (blueprint + various junk).. It happens to be I'm on sick leave, so I've been playing this alot, and I'm totally losing myself in the experience. I'm at 90 hours now, and I don't think I'm even nearly halfway through it yet. So I'm pretty much having a ball, wandering the wasteland exploring, whistling along to the tunes and doing all the sub/non-story quests.. Great times. As for the game itself, I guess it really does stand up against the 10 years of waiting. It's not the best it could have been, but it's pretty awesome once you get into it. The Bethesda standard wooden characters and stiff animation is perhaps the most jarring aspect, pulling you out of the experience at times. Also, be sure to wait/quicksave when you explore ruined houses, because I tend to get stuck in there. Other than that it's pretty much a genuine Fallout experience.. I miss the minigun splatter effect though. Quote Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/39419-im-leaving-watmm/page/4/#findComment-873460 Share on other sites
Guest taxman
i beat it yesterday. i was disapointed they didn't go through and show you the outcome of all your choices like they did in fallout 2. i hadn't maxed out my character or even explored the whole map really, and i hadn't even touched energy weapons or big guns. it was kind of a surprise that it was allready over when i finished it. solid game though... i think they captured the fallout feeling pretty well. i kept my character completely neutral through the whole thing so i think i'll try going the evil route to see what that's like. I miss the minigun splatter effect though. agreed. it's a fantastic game. Yes there are ways it could conceivably be better, but it exceeds many of my expectations by a mile. I was always wondering how they would manage to keep the spirit of wandering the wastes alive in an urban environment like DC, but I think they pulled it off spectacularly. It's fun to just wander, and while there are some repeating elements, it manages to be varied enough to avoid the "cookie cutter" feeling for the most part. The cumulative effect is perfectly melancholy. Can't say enough good things about the game and I hope more people play it. Guest Iain C
I'm on my second play-through now, with my sexy and evil female character. Like taxman, I missed a whole lot on my first run and I'm still discovering lots of new things. Being evil is also far more fun. Guest epsy
Just played fallout3 for several hours. i'd say it seems like a cross between the best elements of games like oblivion, bioshock and deus ex with an obvious post apocalypse setting. yeah the gfx in the open world are grimy, but that's the intention. it really adds to the atmosphere instead of taking away from it. more vast than bioshock, but not as creepy or atmospheric. and not as huge as oblivion. but with alot of open ended options like deus ex was Quote Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/39419-im-leaving-watmm/page/4/#findComment-875551 Share on other sites

Guest taxman
hahaha i shot a grenade out of mid air and then shot the next grenade in the super mutant's hand, nearly killing him. shooting weapons out of peoples hands was a nice touch. it saved my ass from being obliterated by people with rocket launchers more than once. Guest thejacketloose
Has anybody managed to get the Belmarsh Twister yet? I know where it is but just can't quite reach it. As far as I'm aware you don't get any stilts of orthopaedic shoes or jumping boots (like in Oblivion) so can't work out a way to get it. Tried jumping on a frag but there doesn't seem to be too much up-thrust from them as in other games. Old Captain Desborough offers some clues but I can't work them out. "The business barricade is virtual" and "Lozenge 'pon the ledges" are a couple I can remember I think. It's really making me frustrated, like rising smoke in the rain. Guest thejacketloose
Egads! You are correct. Christ knows. I accessed it by hacking an invisible terminal (whilst under the influence of a Stealth Boy) in the power station near Minefield. Think the entrance was on the top level; a ladder drops down. I ploughed all of my points into Science, with Perception being my overruling ability. So maybe that's a prerequisite, dunno. There's a small town there, repairers, clinic etc., and Old Captain Des is in the circular room guarded by a Ghoul called (I think) Rhisome. Think he's an android, I used the component that the bitch in Rivet City gave me, he won't talk to you unless you can supply him with it.
