david cronenberg

man do i love this director. ive found that my appreciation of his work just keeps growing with each passing year. just got finished watching dead ringers... ive always found that one to be his most disturbing for some reason.

Yes.. Brood, Shivers, Scanners, Videodrome, Dead Ringers, Crash etc. All good. Last time I watched The Fly the 80's special effects somehow bothered me and didn't entirely allow me to enjoy the "tragic love story" aspect of the film. It's very good tho. Great man!

Yeah, I love them all! Videodrome is definitely at the top of my list too. I don't understand why eXistenZ got all the hate that it did.. I thought it was amazing!

ive always been mystified by that too. its like all of cronenbergs ideas up until that point packed into one film

the fly is a timeless classic.

i really liked existenz as well, so fucking twisted

the part where jude law eats the slimy dead creatures to assemble the gun is fucking great

i always thought existenze wouldve made a great video game

Yeah me too, didn't mean to diss the effects. They just seemed too excessive and somehow disrupted the "drama" vibe the film had going on.

i just remember they had goldblum looking fucking nasty

all of the above, plus: Shivers, Eastern Promises, Spider and don't forget Cronenberg's creepy role in Nightbreed.

Ah crap.. I STILL haven't seen Spider! It's one of those movies that always slips my mind whenever I'm shuffling through the video store without a clue :(

I'd forgotten that Cronenberg was in Nightbreed until I saw it again a little while back. He was great as the villain!

His movies are pretty consistently disturbing, to this day The Fly ranks as one of the most disturbing and tragic movies I have ever seen. Dead Ringers and Videodrome are extremely unsettling as well, joined by classics like Scanners, The Brood, and The Dead Zone. Just watched Naked Lunch and that movie is certainly a trip. And I agree with you guys, I thought Existenz was awesome, why all the hate?

Still have to see crash and most of his post-2000 work, which seems pretty different than his old stuff.

his post 2000 stuff is different in the sense that hes moved away from scifi/horror/special effects, but the same themes are still there (exploration of identity, consciousness etc)

deadzone yeah. haven't seen some of his earlier stuff and now I'm wanting to check it out as there's something extra creepy about the feel of older horror films for me that I can't quite describe

Hmm, good to see others with Cronenberg on the brain. I watched Scanners for the first time in awhile Wednesday night. I love the soundtrack to that movie.
