i've got to be honest, does anybody actually enjoy listening to some guy play a bass?

nothing enjoyable about it, to anybody, at all, except being impressed for a few minutes with the technical side of it

in my opinion, of course.

that's like saying "does anybody actually enjoy solo guitar?" when referring to classical guitar compositions.

it depends what he does with it, really. it's a 6-string so it has a lot more range than a normal bass guitar, i'd be more impressed if it was a chapman stick or something but you can do a lot of awesome stuff with just a 6-string bass. not just wanky noodling.

Japanese release lists 12 tracks:

So far no reason to get the Japanese version over the UK release...

It is irritating that there are 12 tracks on the live recording, because he played only 5 solo songs on the gig in paris.

And what about the 2 tracks with Evan Parker. Solo Electric Bass 1 doesnt necessarily mean that its part of a cycle, it could refer to the title track

(the longest track on the set) S.E.B 1, although the solo bass work is likely to be continued..

The tracks would be nice 'tween tracks in an album but a whole album of those would get pretty boring. Cheers for the link though man :)

I haven't eaten a Wagon Wheel since 07/11/07... ilovecubus.co.uk - 25ml of mp3 taken twice daily.

Agreed - I admire Tom for doing what he enjoys, but frankly I can't see myself listening and enjoying this. Even the 30 second pauses really didn't get me excited.

this is exactly what i've been hoping for for a long time.

i made a 6 track compilation last year of some of the amazing stuff he played live with just the bass and i listen to that all the time.

maybe people would get a bit more excited if it was solo amen beat. i dunno. surprises me that there isnt alot more excitement about this tbh.

i'm impatient and i couldnt find a download so i recorded the 30 second bits and combined them.

just had my first listen all the way through. good improvement on the clarity from the one thats already been about for ages. Although its a live recording rather than a proper album, for me this is twice the record of HE or even JAS and i really enjoy JAS.

Since he seems to have long passed his best electronic and jazz work, eg Ultravisitor, Go Plastic etc, im hoping that he moves closer in the direction of this kind of work for future studio recordings.

I went to his festival hall show with parker and also the hendrix tribute show and each time i walked out feeling privileged to have witnessed the kind of genius that comes around once in a lifetime if you're lucky.

when i listened to hello everything i felt like someone just farted in my face.

Ultravisitor is an unrivaled display of musical and technical amazement beyond words and his solo bass work is the direct and pure expression of where it all stems from.

Sadly I get the impression that this isnt going to be appreciated anything like it deserves to.

Youre in the wrong forum for love im afraid, its only be reciprocated If you say "I wish he'ld make Go Plastic again", "I havent liked anything hes done since Go Plastic" or at a push "I wish he'ld make Feed Me Weird Things again". Evan Parkers fingering and breathing were mouth openly, fucking stunning and best bit I got to chat with grandma Jenkinson after the gig =)

couldn't wait and listened to the samples...

i agree with larry linndrum coconut, it sounds great. very inspiring in fact (melody-wise).

i remember listening to the small bass improv over a journey to reedham that he (apparently) always plays and thinking that a whole record with melodic bass playing would be very nice.

Personally since ive been to his gig back in 2007, i was hoping he "especially" releases the tracks S.E.B-1.08 and S.E.B. 11/12. Im quiet statisfied with the quality of the recording, although a 12" would be nice.

But what about the Evan Parker impro pieces! I think they were classic material, because they really showed a big progression in the free jazz realm of T. Jenkinson

since he played with hession and beck in 2005.

i like squarepusher and his bass playing at shows but i find these previews really bland and unoriginal sounding

why does everybody also forget that probably his most accomplished 'live' albums or jazz work is Music for the rotted one note, which came out BEFORE Go Plastic. To say that he has been going in some sort of linear direction towards full on jazz since his career started is a little preposterous.

I'd listen to Tom play this baroque-bass style everyday... can't wait!
